Ætheric Earplugs
MS 0506.69 · Objects and instruments
Ætheric Earplugs are a class of conductive isolation devices manufactured and regulated by the Department of Acoustic Anomalies for the purpose of mitigating auditory overspill from Oneiric Resonances and related phenomena. Classified under Annex 7.β of the Seventh Concordance, their efficacy is measured in Decibels of Dream Attenuation (DDA), with standard-issue models rated between 18 and 45 DDA.
Specifications & Certification
Per Clause 333.12, any device marketed as an ætheric earplug must undergo a 72-hour immersion test within a calibrated Public Dream chamber on Floor 333. Certification is granted only if the wearer’s subsequent Oneiric Integrity Screening shows a dream-contamination score below 0.3 Epsilon. The plugs themselves are typically molded from a sintered silica compound infused with minute traces of archived silence, a substance catalogued under Holding 47-G-889 within Spiral 47-Gamma. The external surface is often ribbed or fluted to diffuse residual ætheric pressure, while the internal matrix is designed to resonate in precise counter-harmony to common oneiric frequencies.
Operational Use
Ætheric earplugs are mandatory personal protective equipment for all personnel engaged in active resonance harvesting, archive auditions on unstable floors (such as Floor 2001 and Floor 707), and during any procedure involving a Whisper of the Unbuilt Bridge. Their use is also strongly recommended, though not yet mandated by Concordance, for Librarians conducting long-term audits near sections where the principle of Borrowed Coherence is known to be thinning. Field reports, such as the log of Archivist Kael from Expedition 12-Δ, note that while standard plugs (18-28 DDA) suffice for general stack maintenance, high-yield resonance extraction requires specialist models rated above 35 DDA to prevent “conceptual backwash” into the wearer’s waking cognition.
Regulatory Controversies
The regulatory landscape surrounding ætheric earplugs is notably fragmented. The Seventh Concordance establishes the DDA rating system and certification protocol, but the older Third Concordance still contains un-repealed clauses (notably 201.4 & 201.5) that refer to “Auditory Dampeners” measured in Obsolete Muffling Units (OMU). This has led to protracted jurisdictional disputes between the Department of Acoustic Anomalies and the Guild of Sonic Regulators, each appealing to a different Concordance. A secondary controversy concerns the “Pass-Through Paradox”: while the plugs are highly effective against structured dream-forms, some studies suggest they can amplify unstructured, ambient ætheric hum, a claim the Department vigorously disputes.
Manufacture & Distribution
Licensed manufacture is permitted only within three certified ateliers, all located on sub-levels of the Department of Acoustic Anomalies. The primary raw material, archived silence, is a controlled substance, and its allocation for earplug production is a matter of quarterly committee review. Distribution is managed through the Department’s own supply arm; private sale or barter of certified ætheric earplugs is a breach of Concordance and can result in revocation of resonance-handling licenses. Uncertified or counterfeit plugs, often distributed in the interstitial markets between official floors, pose a significant risk, as they may fail catastrophically under high resonant load, leading to irreversible oneiric implantation.
Scholarly Discourse
The fundamental operating principle of ætheric earplugs remains a point of scholarly contention. The predominant “Resonant Nullification” theory, endorsed by the Department, holds that the plugs generate a precise anti-phase field that cancels incoming oneiric waveforms. A minority school of thought, led by researchers in the quieter stacks of Spiral 47-Gamma, argues for the “Selective Permeability Model,” suggesting the plugs do not cancel resonance but rather filter it, allowing benign tonal elements to pass while trapping potentially destabilizing narrative or emotional harmonics. This debate is more than academic, as it influences the design protocols for next-generation isolation gear. No field test has yet been devised that can conclusively prove one model over the other, as the subjective, qualitative experience of the protected wearer is, by definition, impossible to fully archive.
