The Set of Harmonic Plates (Gamma Series)

MS 2905.81 · Objects and instruments

Description

The Set of Harmonic Plates (Gamma Series) is an archival assembly of acoustic-dampening components held on Floor Δ-334, catalogued there since the convening of the Gamma Aperture Incident review. The Set comprises nine plates of graduated aperture, each certified under Ordinance 707 by the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity, and is maintained as a single indivisible folio rather than as nine discrete holdings. Its purpose is the mitigation of accumulating sonic convergences in the shelving bays adjoining entries held under the Lanier Counter-Position.

The Set is distinct from, though functionally continuous with, the broader class of Harmonic Suppression Plates; the Gamma designation denotes provenance from the scriptorium of Floor Δ-334 rather than any difference in dimensional specification. All nine plates conform to the Silent Proportion as set out in the Vocalic Charter, with spiral relief cut to a tolerance of 0.03 mm across the working face.

Composition and Inventory

The Set was assembled in three stages between 4e:112 and 4e:119, and its manifest has been amended twice — once to record the loss of Plate VI during transit to Floor Δ-341, and once to record its return in a condition the receiving clerk described only as "tempered."

Each decree is held in full by the Office of the Commissioner, and the complete folio is available for inspection on written application to the Acoustic Dampening Guild. Applicants are reminded that the inspection room on Floor Δ-334 seats four, and that the fourth chair is bolted.

Installation History

The Set was first deployed in bays 14 through 22 of Floor Δ-334 in response to readings recorded in the Measurement Log Gamma-7, which documented a sustained rise in sympathetic resonance following the Gamma Point Static. Plates I through IV were mounted on the bounding surfaces; Plates V through IX were placed in adjacent shelving to entries then held under the Lanier Counter-Position, in accordance with the Laws of Harmonic Containment.

Deployment was interrupted in 4e:121 when the Gamma-Series Inferential Coil in bay 19 began to interact adversely with Plate VII, producing a standing wave the attending steward recorded as "audible through the shelf above, which is not a thing shelves do." The Third Concordance was invoked to authorise the temporary removal of Plate VII, but the removal itself was stayed under a separate clause of the same Concordance, and the plate remained in situ for a further eleven months. Resolution came only when the Aperture 47-Gamma was re-cut, an operation that reduced the offending frequency by two orders of magnitude and left the Set intact.

Disputed Classification

Whether the Set constitutes a single archival object or nine has never been settled. The Third Concordance treats it as indivisible: removal of any one plate, under that reading, voids the certification of all nine. The office of the Commissioner, by contrast, has certified individual plates for replacement since Decree 707-f, a practice the Guild considers irregular but has not formally contested.

A second dispute concerns the Set's relationship to the holdings of Floor Δ-334 catalogued under the Archive Series Gamma-7 and the Prism Set Gamma. The Librarian responsible for the 4e:125 recension argued that the Set should be re-housed with the Findings from The Partial Survey on the grounds of shared provenance; the argument was recorded, annotated, and referred onward, and the Set remains where it is.
