Harmonic Suppression Plate

MS 0964.76 · Objects and instruments

Harmonic Suppression Plate is a class of acoustic-dampening instrument installed throughout the Tower to physically enforce Bounding Context through resonant frequency tuning and to mitigate the effects of accumulating sonic convergences. Certified by the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity, the Plate is mandated on floors designated as archival quarantine zones and is treated as a stabilizing measure against dissonance in Suppression Protocols.

Construction and Dimensional Law

Per the Vocalic Charter, every Harmonic Suppression Plate must observe the Silent Proportion, a set of dimensional ratios governing length, aperture, and spiral relief. The Acoustic Dampening Guild casts each Plate from annealed shelving-bronze and fits it to bounding surfaces in Phase 3 zones to dampen acoustic resonance. The Seventh Concordance records the initial principles for harmonic suppression and vocal quarantine, stipulating that no Plate may be narrower than 3.4 digits nor thicker than 1.1 digits at its omega relief. A recension of 8841/Δ corrected an earlier error in which Plates on Floor 119-Notched had been cast to the Loud Proportion by the Scriptorium of Misaligned Ratios, producing a resonance later filed under Index of Harmonic Anomalies.

Plates intended for installation adjacent to entries under the Lanier Counter-Position require a secondary tuner, as set out in Ordinance 707, an element with which the Plate is formally associated. The Office of Harmonic Measurement maintains that dual-purpose variants overlap with the Class II, a standardized instrument for passive suppression and active measurement of tertiary metaphysical harmonics, though the Harmonic Cartographer disputes this as a category error in the 441st recension.

Certification and the Commissioner's Decree

Final certification of a Harmonic Suppression Plate requires a unanimous decree from the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity, who holds complete folios of every certification decree in the Office of Harmonic Measurement's vault annex. The Harmonic Integrity Review of Winter 5523 noted that Clerk Pell of the Lower Scriptoria lodged a grievance after his certifying seal was returned unstamped owing to a contradiction between the Seventh Concordance and the Third Concordance on the permitted hum of installed Plates. The dispute was settled by citing the Suppression Protocols, which the Clerk later observed "settles nothing, as the Protocols themselves cite both Concordances in adjoining clauses" (Harmonic Integrity Review, Vol. 12, p. 44).

"No Plate shall be installed whose silent proportion yields a residual tone above the threshold of the Silent Proportion as amended, save where the Commissioner decrees otherwise in writing under seal."

— Vocalic Charter, Clause 9, Annex Beta

Installation and Quarantine Practice

Harmonic Suppression Plates are installed on bounding surfaces in Phase 3 zones and in adjacent shelving bays to entries under the Lanier Counter-Position. In archival quarantine zones, the Acoustic Dampening Guild maintains quietude zones through their upkeep. During the Suppression of the Conditionalist Uprising, Plates were stripped from Floors 22-Empty through 22-Full and later re-tuned by the Harmonic Reshelving office, a process the Harmonic Pumps division recorded as requiring 411 turns of the lower spiral.

Visitors to Plate-installed quarantine bays may not hum, even to themselves, between the second and third bell.

Scholarly Disagreement on Function

A long-standing dispute concerns whether the Plate suppresses or merely records. The Harmonic Derivation school holds that the Plate is inert once tuned, its function exhausted by enforcement of Bounding Context. The Office of Harmonic Measurement contends, per the Harmonic Assessment of 6102, that Plates continue to measure through the Harmonic Gauge even in silence, feeding the Harmonic Void with residual data. The Index of Harmonic Anomalies lists 17 instances where a Plate emitted a tone subsequently attributed to the Harmonic Gauge rather than the Plate, a finding the Acoustic Dampening Guild rejects as mis-attribution by the Harmonic Cartographer.

Relation to Other Instruments

The Resonance Plate is frequently confused with the Harmonic Suppression Plate, though the former amplifies rather than dampens and is prohibited in quarantine zones under Ordinance 707. The Class II shares the Silent Proportion but adds active measurement not required of the suppression Plate. The Harmonic Pumps and Harmonic Reshelving offices coordinate Plate movement during floor reassignment, a task the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity described in 5521 as "necessary and never completed" (Suppression Protocols, Annex 7).
