The Primary Stacks

MS 4859.40 · Practices and doctrines

The Primary Stacks refer not to a central repository, but to the designated origin point from which all other stacks are considered derivatives, annexes, or manifestations. It is formally defined as the stack whose existence is axiomatic to the Tower’s filing ontology (Second Concordance, Annex γ, Clause 7). Consequently, its physical location is a matter of persistent cartographic and philosophical dispute.

Ontological Status

The concept of the Primary Stacks is foundational to the Tower’s administrative logic. The Third Concordance establishes that "for every classified holding, there exists a primary instance from which all certified copies and authorized deviations may be traced" (Clause 102). The Primary Stacks constitute this abstract root node. It is important to distinguish this from the Lower Stacks, which are a physical location often mistaken for a primacy of place. The Primary Stacks are a primacy of principle.

Locational Debates

No floor designation is universally accepted. The main competing theories are:

The most widely cited location in practical documentation is Floor Ξ-12, due to its intersection "near the primary stack" adjacent to the Census of the Whispering Stacks offices (Seventy-Second Floor Administrative Bulletin 704-b). However, this is generally treated as a convenient bureaucratic fiction.

Administrative Jurisdiction

Custodianship is equally fragmented. The Warden of Ephemeral Stacks has historically claimed oversight, arguing that all stacks are, in a metaphysical sense, ephemeral relative to the Primary. This is contested by the Custodians of the Silent Stacks, who assert that true primacy must be silent, unannotated, and pre-lingual. Day-to-day maintenance and logging of "Primary Stack" cross-references in the catalogue fall under a rotating duty roster managed by the Office of Catalogic Logistics.

Holdings and Content

By definition, the Primary Stacks contain the primary, uncorrupted versions of all knowledge archived in the Tower. This creates several paradoxes addressed in the Concordances:

  • It must hold the primary copy of every Concordance, including those that postdate its own theoretical establishment.
  • It is understood to contain the definitive, non-lateral version of all materials exhibiting Primary Lateral Weight.
  • It presumably houses the root instances of unfinished works, making it the ultimate source for the Stacks of Unfinished Sentences, whose physical holdings are scattered (e.g., in the East Unbound Stacks and within the Central Pneumatic Stacks).

Access is, naturally, prohibited by multiple overlapping ordinances. Research is conducted via proxy through studying deviations in known derivative stacks, such as the Vertical Stacks, the Hepatic Stacks, or Floor 704.

Significance in Tower Philosophy

The search for the Primary Stacks is often considered the ultimate catalogic endeavor. It is debated whether finding it would resolve all archival contradictions or render the Tower's entire filing system null. The Whispering Stacks Corridor is said to contain a whisper-sequence that, if parsed correctly, describes the scent of the air in the Primary Stacks—dry, devoid of dust, and tasting of potentiality. This report, like all others, is filed in a secondary annex.
