The Anechoic Reliquary
MS 4381.10 · Places and structures
The Anechoic Reliquary is a sealed repository located within the Anechoic Galleries of Floor 312, Aperture Gamma, designed for the containment of artifacts designated as "acoustically resonant in purely theoretical spaces." Its primary function, as defined by Concordance 88, Clause 14, is to prevent the cross-contamination of conceptual harmonics between incompatible ontological categories. The Reliquary’s most notable holding was the Silent Bell from the Year of the Silent Bell, prior to its controversial relocation to the Lower Stacks of Floor 1442 the Anechoic Galleries.
Architectural Specifications
Constructed pursuant to Ordinance 712-Δ, the Anechoic Reliquary is a double-walled chamber measuring exactly 7.412 meters per side. The interstitial space between the walls is filled with a vacuum, maintained by the perpetual-motion apparatus housed in the Anechoic Spire. The inner sanctum is lined with panels of sintered Echo Crystal annealed to a non-resonant frequency, a process developed by the Guild of Quantitative Idealists. Entry is governed by the Third Concordance, Annex C, which stipulates a mandatory 48-hour period of auditory deprivation for any personnel prior to accessing the primary airlock.
“The silence within is not an absence, but a defined volume of approved quietude.”
Containment Protocol
Artifacts are admitted to the Reliquary only upon issuance of a Form 44/B, the same administrative backbone used for the broader Anechoic Galleries. The protocol, managed in part by Reliquary Recovery, requires each object to be sealed first within a Dual-Chambered Reliquary of Implied Sovereignty before being placed on one of the 100 ceramic plinths within the main chamber. The most famous application of this protocol was the containment of the Silent Bell, whose theoretical resonance was calculated to potentially destabilize the Specimen Stair.
The 712 Discrepancy
A persistent archival conflict concerns the Reliquary’s relationship to the Reliquary Alcove on Floor 7,412. Concordance 102 explicitly states the Anechoic Reliquary is a subsidiary annex of the Alcove. However, the foundational survey of Floor 312 (Catalogued under Case File 2001-44/B) makes no such reference, instead listing the Reliquary as a sovereign holding. This has led to a protracted bureaucratic dispute regarding which body—the curators of the Galleries or the clerks of the Alcove—controls the schedule for the Quinquennial Reconciliation of its contents. The issue remains unresolved, though practical oversight defaults to the Galleries’ staff.
Notable Holdings
Beyond the former primary resident, the Silent Bell, the Reliquary’s inventory includes:
- The Whisperer’s Opponent: A perfect cube of iron that, according to ledger entries, absorbs all sound directed at it with hostile intent. It has never been tested.
- Specimen 881-422’s Original Resonator: The tuning fork allegedly used to first measure the resonant frequency of Specimen 881-422 ("The Silent Bell") on the Specimen Stair. It is kept in a vacuum-sealed case.
- Seven Phials of Counter-Echo: Volumes of silence harvested by Echo Recovery teams from the Quiet Room, stored in Echo Crystal phials. Their purpose is listed as "contingency negation."
Theoretical Function & Controversy
The Guild of Quantitative Idealists, who maintain the Reliquary’s vacuum apparatus, argue its true purpose is to serve as a baseline "acoustic ground" for calibrating instruments that measure hypothetical sounds, such as those employed in Elara Verner's method. Opponents, chiefly from the Specimen Wing, contend the Reliquary is an elaborate storage solution for a problem that exists only within the Concordances that mandate it. They point to the successful—and uneventful—transfer of the Silent Bell to Floor 1,442 as evidence that the chamber’s stringent isolation protocols are superfluous. This debate is typically suspended during Reconciliation periods, when the Sanctioned Quill of Erasure is present to amend the master inventory.
The Anechoic Reliquary thus exists at the intersection of archival doctrine and practical acoustics, a monument to the Tower’s commitment to isolating concepts that might, under other circumstances, be heard.
