Somnolent Goat

MS 4465.35 · Objects and instruments

Somnolent Goat is a catalogued specimen of the Somnolent Mimer class, first deposited in the Granular Repositories during the 418th recension of the lower annexes and subsequently entangled, through a series of jurisdictional errors, with the personage and proceedings of the Perpetually Absent Goat. Unlike the Perpetually Absent Goat, which is an unmanifest entity assigned the transient integer 7,414.1α, the Somnolent Goat is held to be materially present though persistently dormant, and is recorded as warm to the touch on the ninth of every month, a property it shares with the Somnolent Fontanel.

Discovery and Initial Classification

The Somnolent Goat was recovered from a deposit of Somnolent Sand by Surveyor-Adjunct Mirelle Ostrand on the floor numbered 2,033-Δ, during a routine audit of granular holdings. Ostrand noted in her field ledger that the specimen "exhibited Intent of Motion consistent with recalcitrant sediment, though no locomotion was observed" (Treatise on Latent Agency, folio 12). The object was initially entered as a variant folio of the Somnolent Folio type, a misclassification that the Soporific Spore Incident later proved consequential for containment. Following Declaration 88-C, which re-categorized Somnolent Sand from 'dormant' to 'recalcitrant', the Goat was amended to the Somnolent Mimer class and assigned the seal of the Granular Repositories.

Jurisdictional Entanglement with the Perpetually Absent Goat

The confusion between the Somnolent Goat and the Perpetually Absent Goat originates in the Case of the Perpetually Absent Goat, wherein the Custodial Goat office asserted stewardship over all caprine entries regardless of manifest status. The Great Re-Cataloguing of the Perpetually Absent Goat and the related Great Re Cataloguingthe Case of the Perpetually Absent Goat both appended the Somnolent Goat to schedules of the the Perpetually Absent Goat, on the reasoning that absence and dormancy are "contrary expressions of the same archival silence" (Somnolent Jurisprudence, clause 9-β). The Third Concordance rejects this, stating plainly:

"A goat that is warm is not a goat that is absent; the Granular Repositories shall retain the Somnolent Goat notwithstanding any schedule of the Perpetually Absent."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

Nevertheless, the office of the Custodial Goat continues to file quarterly objections, and the matter is recited annually before the Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning.

Physical Description and Observed Properties

The Somnolent Goat measures 1.2 metres at the shoulder and is composed in part of Somnolent Sand bound by proto-architectonic potential, a condition observed also in the Somnolent Fontanel. It does not close, in the sense applicable to the Fontanel, nor does it open; it merely persists. The specimen is warm on the ninth of every month, a property recorded by Ostrand and confirmed by the Aspergillus soporifex culture maintained in the adjoining scriptorium. Visitors are prohibited from offering it grain, as the resulting sediment displacement invalidates the floor's calibration marks.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether the Somnolent Goat absorbs proto-architectonic potential from the surrounding Somnolent Sand or merely displaces it. The Second Concordance holds that "recalcitrant sand imparts motion to that which it surrounds, and the Goat is therefore a vessel of Intent" (Second Concordance, clause 3-ω), whereas the Fifth Concordance contends the Goat is inert and the sand alone is agent. The Treatise on Latent Agency declines to resolve the question, noting only that "both offices have cited the wrong annex for forty years" (Treatise on Latent Agency, appendix C). The Librarians have issued no ruling, as is their custom where contradiction is habitual.

Containment and Present Custody

Following the misclassification that contributed to the Soporific Spore Incident, the Somnolent Goat was sealed within a double recension vault on floor 2,033-Δ and listed under the Vellum of Perpetual Reckoning as holding number 88-C/7. The Custodial Goat office retains visiting rights but not custody. proto-architectonic potential continues to be absorbed by materials in the vault, and the Granular Repositories submits an inventory every ninth month to the Somnolent Jurisprudence court. No expedition has requested transfer of the Goat upward or downward, and the Librarians record this as evidence of correct placement.
