Simulated Citation Mapping

MS 6549.34 · Practices and doctrines

Simulated Citation Mapping is a procedural exercise conducted within the Tower to predict, model, and evaluate the potential consequences of an applied or proposed citation chain prior to its formal inscription. It is a form of speculative Citation Mapping that operates on hypothetical or projected documentation, governed by Article 7 of the Twelve Citing Concordances which establishes its non-binding but preparatory status.

Purpose and Regulation

The primary function of Simulated Citation Mapping is to prevent unforeseen cascades or loops that might destabilize referential integrity. As per the Treatise on Anticipatory Systems held in the Office of Normative Pathways, a simulation must be logged with a Provisional Pathway Identifier (PPI) before any real citation is affixed. The Office of Reciprocal Citation administers the PPI registry and reviews all simulation outcomes that exceed a predetermined complexity threshold, designated as Sigma-4 or higher. The simulation itself does not constitute a Binding Citation, though its records become citable data points in subsequent audits.

Methodology

A standard simulation, often referred to as a "dry-chain," begins with a seed document—real or conjectural—and a proposed citation target. Certified Simulators, a subspecialty within the Citation Mapping Bureau, then extrapolate the citation's journey, accounting for:

The output is a probabilistic pathway map, annotated with confidence intervals and flagged conflict nodes. A controversial yet common practice is the use of "mirror holdings"—deliberately incomplete or erroneous copies of real catalog entries—as safe test environments. The Bureau of Concordant Citation has repeatedly condemned this practice as introducing "simulacra pollution," but no concordance explicitly forbids it.

The Valens Precedent

The formalization of simulation protocols is largely attributed to the work of Valens, whose seminal case study involved the Moth-Wing Aspen. Prior to authorizing a Substantiative Citation for the aspen’s disputed flowering cycle, Valens ran seventeen distinct simulations. Three predicted the citation would trigger a latent Negative Citation cascade originating from a mis-filed treatise on deciduous dormancy. The simulation allowed for the citation to be rerouted through an intermediary Conjectural Mapping annex, averting what was later termed a "minor citation winter." This precedent established the standard that any citation with more than two degrees of separation from its foundational source must undergo simulated review.

Disputes and Limitations

A significant doctrinal schism exists regarding the ontological weight of simulations. The "Predictive" school, endorsed by the Office of Reciprocal Citation, holds that a sufficiently detailed simulation reveals inherent structural pressures within the Tower’s referential lattice. The "Inertial" school, based primarily on Floor Ξ-7, argues simulations merely model the librarians’ own expectations and are therefore self-fulfilling prophecies that constrain novel citation discovery.

The chief limitation of the practice is its inability to accurately model "black swan" citation events, such as the spontaneous generation of an Inception Amp Citation or the emergence of a Citation of Opposing Precedent from a previously monolithic chain. The Crisis of the Diverging Citation was notably not predicted by any contemporaneous simulation, a fact often cited by the Inertial school.

Current Applications

Beyond preventive auditing, Simulated Citation Mapping is now routinely used in archival expansion planning and conflict resolution. When two departments claim citation precedence over a newly discovered phenomenon, they are often required to submit competing simulation models. The model demonstrating the greatest referential stability (measured by lowest aggregate echo score) is typically granted provisional authority. Furthermore, all proposals for amending the Twelve Citing Concordances themselves must be accompanied by a full-spectrum simulation of the amendment’s impact on all other active concordances, a process that can take decades and frequently results in the proposal being withdrawn.
