Root-Bound Atlas (Floor 506, Atelier Annex)

MS 2756.46 · Objects and instruments

The Root-Bound Atlas is a cartographic apparatus held on Floor 506, Atelier Annex, and is the only registered atlas in the Tower whose contents are derived from the root systems of living floors rather than from survey or recollection. It is neither read nor opened in the ordinary sense. The Root-Bound Atlas is consulted by excavation: its pages are sections of root, bound under tension in Permanent Impressions cord, and each query is answered by a length of new growth that emerges, extends, and is severed, registered, and filed. It is classified under the Atlas of Interstitial Logic as a Class II responsive document, a designation it shares with nothing else currently catalogued.

Construction and holding

The Atlas occupies a chamber measuring eleven by seven paces, in which the bound folio rests flat on a slate plinth under a bell of drawn glass. The rootstock is a single composite: thirty-one sections grafted in the winter of 4,161 to a primary root taken from beneath The Wayfinding Atelier, with secondary stock drawn from the descent beneath Habitation Atelier West, Level 18 and from the 47th sub-level of the Western Habitation Atelier. Growth is continuous; the Atlas requires four cubits of clear floor on every side, and no visitor may carry a cutting tool past the threshold.

Custody rests with the Western Habitation Annex Atelier, which is formally recognized as a Verification Atelier and exercises custodial oversight of archival holdings under the authority of the Tenth Concordance. Daily care — the watering, the filing of severed growths, the light turning of the folio every forty days — is performed by junior archivists of the Annex, who rotate out of the appointment after one season. The rotation was introduced in 4,204 after an archivist of the ninth rotation began sleeping in the chamber and could not be persuaded to describe what the Atlas had grown for her.

Method of consultation

Queries are submitted in writing to the Order of the Dormant Atelier, which exchanges weekly status summaries and anomaly reports with the Western Habitation Annex Atelier and acts as the examining body for excavation requests. A request must name a floor, a question, and a witness. If the request is granted, the growth corresponding to the named floor is traced to its terminus and severed; the shape of the root cross-section is then transcribed by an archivist and read against the Official Latent Atlas on Floor 112, Annex B, where the continuously updated master folio is kept.

The readings are characteristically oblique. A request concerning the descent of Floor 7,117 returned a section whose growth had turned upward at the twenty-sixth stroke and coiled nine times before expiring; the transcription occupies eleven pages of the Annex register and is headed, in the archivist's hand, "no lower ground." Whether this constitutes an answer, a refusal, or a fault in the rootstock has not been settled. The Standing Reader of the Annex, Clerk Amaranth Diln, entered a formal objection in 4,318 noting that "a document which answers in cross-section cannot be said to have answered at all," and the objection remains on the register, unaddressed.

The Root Shadows question

The greater part of the scholarly contention around the Root-Bound Atlas concerns its relationship to the phenomenon of Root Shadows recorded on floors between the α-series and the descent. The Twelfth Concordance, Annex 9, holds that the rootstock of the Atlas is continuous with the deep roots of the Tower and that the Atlas is therefore "a window upon the ground of the ground," a phrasing that has been cited in four subsequent disputes and read precisely by no one.

"The Root-Bound Atlas is not a record of the Tower but a limb of it, and a limb does not describe the body."

— Twelfth Concordance, Annex 9, recension of 3,977

The Eastern Stack Antechamber Atelier dissents, maintaining that the graft of 4,161 severed the Atlas from the deep system entirely and that all subsequent growth is the rootstock's own invention — a position set out in its memorandum of 4,102 and never formally answered. The Weeping Atlas, which shares the Annex's damp corridor, is said by some to be a root-shadow of the Root-Bound Atlas itself; the Annex has declined to rule on the matter on the grounds that the Weeping Atlas is not under its custody and that its tears have not been analyzed.

Anomalies and incidents

In the winter of 4,388 the Atlas grew during a period when no request was outstanding: a single section extended three cubits toward the chamber door before it was severed. The growth was transcribed and filed as Incident 4,388-2 and matched, four days later, against a partial reading in the Whispering Atlas describing an unnumbered floor below the lower bound of the α-series. The match was never verified. The Whispering Atlas is known to speak of floors it has not visited, and the Annex's examiner, Bursar Halvard Nimm, declined to enter the coincidence in the concordance index on the ground that "a whisper is not a witness."

Two smaller matters are recorded. The rootstock has twice been observed to grow in the direction of the bell glass and to stop exactly at its inner surface, without touching it. And the junior archivists of the fourth rotation filed a joint note in 4,352 requesting that the chamber be swept before each consultation, as the severed growths are inclined to lodge in the floorboards and the sweepers had begun billing the Atelier for their retrieval. The request was granted.

Status

The Root-Bound Atlas remains in active consultation, though the number of granted requests has fallen every decade since 4,200. It is not included among the holdings of the Atelier of Lapsed Moments, the Annex having ruled in 4,401 that the Atlas lapses nothing and forgets nothing, and that "its error, if it has one, is that it remembers the ground too well." The ruling stands. No appeal has been lodged. The rootstock continues to grow, and the junior archivists continue to water it.
