Radicle Stage
MS 4885.18 · Practices and doctrines
Radicle Stage refers to the initial, subterranean phase of ontological absorption within the Tower's Protocol for Sustained Engagement, during which a newly catalogued concept's potential for independent growth is assessed and contained.
Position within the Protocol
The Radicle Stage is universally recognized as the first of the seven phases of the Protocol for Sustained Engagement, preceding Declarative Parsing and Isolation of Variance. Its placement is uncontroversial and is explicitly outlined in General Administrative Protocols, Annex Δ-7, Clause 1. It is the foundational act of "planting" a new conceptual subject within the Tower's soil, prior to any visible development. The metaphor of germination, while pervasive in procedural literature, is not considered metaphorical by senior Librarians; the Stage's physical processes are documented to occur on floors designated for primary incubation, such as Floor 114-B, "The Seed Bank".
Procedural Mandates
According to Section 12.1.1 of the General Administrative Protocols, the Radicle Stage must commence within 24 hours of a holding's provisional accession number being assigned by the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis. The stage involves three core activities:
- Basal Encryption: The subject's core identifiers are translated into a non-linear cipher and embedded within the foundational memory-substrate of the floor.
- Growth Vector Calibration: Librarians, using instruments like the Ambiguous Theodolite, plot the subject's probable lines of conceptual expansion to prevent intersection with incompatible existing holdings.
- Initial Nutrient Infusion: A standard tincture, derived from Forgotten Resin, is administered to stimulate rudimentary self-awareness within the holding, ensuring it is "alive" enough to proceed to parsing.
Completion is marked by the emission of a specific resonant frequency from the incubation chamber, recorded as Form R-1.
The "Deep Root" Controversy
A significant doctrinal dispute, centered in the Office of Voluntary Correspondence, concerns the permissible depth of radicular development. The Fifth Concordance, Clause 88, states that "the radicle shall not seek foundation in precedent, but in potential." However, the earlier Third Concordance insists that "a rootless concept is a drifting concept," and mandates anchoring within at least three prior, thematically adjacent holdings.
This has led to two distinct schools of practice: the Potentialists, who follow the Fifth Concordance and advocate for minimal constraint, and the Anchorage School, which adheres to the Third Concordance and performs extensive cross-referencing during the Radicle Stage. The conflict is most visible in the divergent cataloguing styles between the Eastern and Western stacks of Floor 299. Holdings originating from the Eastern (Anchorage) stacks exhibit greater stability but reduced generative capacity, while Western (Potentialist) holdings are more prone to spontaneous, often inconvenient, metaphysical branching.
Inter-Stage Dependencies
The success of the Radicle Stage directly determines the stability of all subsequent phases. A poorly calibrated growth vector is the primary cited cause of "conceptual bleed" observed during the Petal Stage. Furthermore, the quality of the Basal Encryption affects the clarity of the Declarative Parsing output; weak encryption is known to produce ambiguous or "hazy" declarations that require costly re-parsing. The Stem Stage, which follows Declarative Parsing, relies entirely on the structural integrity established during radicular development to support the weight of operational protocol integration.
Documentation and Audit Trail
Every Radicle Stage procedure generates a core dossier known as the Primary Germinal Log (PGL). This log is archived in triplicate: one copy remains with the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis, one is transferred to the curatorial team for the upcoming Leaf Stage, and one is deposited into the Register of Vacated Texts as a contingency. The PGL includes the initial growth vector plots, nutrient infusion ratios, and the signatures of the administering Librarians. These logs are the primary evidence examined during a Doctrinal Integration review, should a holding's ontological status later be challenged.
"A concept, like a seed, contains its entire destiny within its first, invisible stirring. Our duty in the Radicle Stage is not to shape that destiny, but to ensure the ground will hold it."
