Leaf Stage
MS 4422.03 · Practices and doctrines
The Leaf Stage is the third of seven phases in the Protocol for Sustained Engagement, a multi-stage resolution process for Categorical Errors. It is formally defined in GAP Annex Δ-7, Clause 11.b, as "the iterative scoping and pruning of a declarative statement prior to its final Declarative Parsing." Operationally, the Leaf Stage constitutes the period during which a draft resolution is manually transcribed onto archival paper stock, permitting physical annotation and amendment before procedural advancement.
Procedural Mandates
Initiation of the Leaf Stage is triggered by the validation of a Resolution Drafting document by a quorum of three Librarians. Per GAP Section 12.4.1, the validated draft must be physically transferred to a designated Scribing Atrium within 24 hours. The transfer is typically recorded via a Chain of Custody Ledger bearing the gold-leaf seal of Floor 440.
The scribe—often a senior clerk from the Department of Ontic Calibration—must employ a briarrose-iron stylus and Δ-grade vellum, a paper stock impregnated with Dissonant Chiffonade particulates to ensure the ink bonds at a molecular level. The entire transcription must be completed in a single, uninterrupted session, the duration of which is not stipulated but is generally accepted to not exceed one waking cycle of the Tower's central luminescence array.
Annotation and the Pruning Protocol
Once transcribed, the vellum "leaf" is subjected to the Pruning Protocol. This involves a line-by-line review where any declarative overreach, ambiguous referent, or tacit assumption is marked for excision. Amendments are made using a secondary ink derived from fermented ledger-berries, which renders them distinct from the primary text. A maximum of seven amendments per leaf is permitted under Annex Δ-7, Clause 14; exceeding this necessitates the leaf being declared "overgrown" and the process recommencing from the outset of the Resolution Drafting phase.
Disagreements during pruning are resolved by reference to the Concordances, though clerks are advised to prioritize recent amendments over foundational texts. The Case of the Seventeen-Leaf Report stands as a cautionary example of the jurisdictional dissolution that can occur when pruning is attempted through an uncertified recursive aperture, rather than the sanctioned linear methodology.
Transition to Subsequent Phases
A successfully pruned leaf is considered "crisp." The Librarians then apply a verification stamp, which initiates the subsequent Petal Stage. This transition is critical: GAP Section 12.7.3 explicitly states that the Stem Stage must commence within 72 hours of the Petal Stage's conclusion, creating a tightly coupled sequence. The stamped leaf is archived in the Register of Vacated Texts under a provisional identifier, where it remains until the final Symbiotic Tincture Formulation renders its contents ontologically binding.
The physical leaf itself undergoes a subtle transformation during the Petal Stage, with the Dissonant Chiffonade particulates causing the vellum to adopt a faint, herbaceous scent—a documented side-effect noted in the addendum by Alaric of the Southern Stacks on Leaf 89 of the Red Folio.
Scholarly Disputes and Doctrinal Variance
The primary doctrinal dispute concerning the Leaf Stage centers on its necessity. A minority faction, led by the scribes of the Western Scriptorium, argues that the Declarative Parsing phase possesses sufficient integrity to render the manual transcription redundant. They cite the computational efficiency of modern parsing engines housed on Floor 112.
The orthodox position, upheld by the Librarians and detailed in the Third Concordance, maintains that the physicality of the leaf is non-negotiable. The act of hand-writing the resolution onto particulate-infused vellum is what "roots" the abstract declaration in the Tower's material substrate, a process deemed essential for later Ontic Substantiation. The debate remains academic, as no deviation from the mandated Leaf Stage has been sanctioned since the ratification of the Δ-7 Annex.
A secondary, more obscure dispute involves the correct interpretation of "uninterrupted session." The General Administrative Protocols are silent on whether brief pauses for hydration or ocular relief constitute an interruption. Precedent suggests allowances are made for pauses under ten minutes, provided the stylus does not leave contact with the vellum. This practice is informally known as "the Dangling Stylus Exception," though it appears in no official record.
