Querists

MS 1704.60 · Guilds, orders and offices

Querists are a recognized sub-order within the Librarians responsible for the operation and oversight of Queried, the automated inquiry system spanning Administrative Spiral Beta. Their existence is mandated by Clause 7 of the Ninth Concordance, though their precise organizational structure and full membership remain undisclosed.

Constitution and Authority

The authority of the Querists derives from the Ninth Concordance, which established the necessity of a "permanent, disinterested body to formulate, maintain, and interpret queries of archive integrity." The Nineteenth Concordance later amended this, transferring all authority over the formulation of new query templates from the Librarian of the Third Order to the Querists, a shift that caused the minor administrative schism known as the Schism of the Silent Inkwell. Querists are formally attached to the Librarian of the Fourth Order, but operate with near-total autonomy, their decisions subject only to review by a panel of their own senior members, a process known as an Silent Audit.

Operational Protocol

Querists are famously silent. Communication with other Tower personnel is conducted exclusively through the use of pre-written questions on small, reusable slate tablets. A typical interaction involves a Querist presenting a tablet bearing a question such as "Has the humidity tolerance for vellum on Floor Ǣ-44 been recalibrated?" or "Is the third postulate of the missing treatise from Elara Voss's collection still considered axiomatic?" The recipient is expected to provide a written answer on the same tablet, which the Querist then collects. Speech is not prohibited, but is considered an extraordinary breach of protocol, recorded in a dedicated log whose pages are, by tradition, never turned.

Their primary duty is the maintenance of Queried. This involves calibrating the system's inference engines, pruning recursive or paradoxical query loops, and physically inspecting the miles of pneumatic tubing and logic-engraved crystal that comprise its infrastructure within Administrative Spiral Beta.

Membership and Initiation

The process of becoming a Querist is not documented in any publicly accessible Concordance. The prevailing theory, supported by cross-references in the personnel rolls of the Order of Silent Quills, suggests initiates are selected from among junior librarians who demonstrate an exceptional tolerance for procedural ambiguity and a documented inability to form rhetorical questions in casual discourse. Upon selection, all prior administrative records pertaining to the individual are transferred to the Querists' custody and are thereafter classified. A Querist is thereafter referred to only by a three-part designation (e.g., Q-Δ-717) in all but the most foundational Tower documents.

Relationship with Other Orders

The Querists' relationship with the broader Librarian Order is characterized by necessary distance and procedural respect. They interface most frequently with the Couriers of the Silent Stair for the physical distribution of query results, and with the archivists of the Order of the Drowned Quill regarding materials recovered from environmentally compromised holdings. Their silent methodology often creates tension with orders reliant on verbal debate, though such tensions are always resolved via citation of the relevant Concordances — a process the Querists inherently favor.

A notable exception is their historical and ongoing collaboration with the Order of Silent Quills, though the exact nature of this collaboration is the subject of extensive, low-priority scholarly speculation. The most cited hypothesis, from a marginal note in the annex to the Third Concordance, suggests the Quills handle the archival of the questions asked by the Tower's systems, while the Querists handle the questions asked of them.

Disputed Functions

Scholarly disagreement surrounds several alleged secondary functions of the Querists. The "Interrogation Hypothesis," advanced by the late Archivist Kaelen, posits that the Querists use their system to perform continuous, low-level epistemological audits on the Tower's foundational concepts, querying the reality of catalogued subjects to ensure they remain sufficiently non-existent. This is contradicted by the "Mendicant View," which holds the Querists are essentially a monastic order devoted to the purity of the question as a form, and their maintenance of Queried is a form of devotional practice.

The most persistent rumor, never confirmed nor denied in any Concordance, is that the Querists maintain a secret, master index of all questions that have never been asked within the Tower. The purpose of such an index, and its physical location—if it exists—remains one of the more engaging minor mysteries of the lower administrative spirals.
