Protocol Beta

MS 0833.42 · Practices and doctrines

Protocol Beta is the recursive procedural instrument by which the Beta-Aligned School governs descent through unindexed floors and by which the Office of Protocol Integrity ratifies documents concerning Spiral Beta events. It is recorded both as a practice of seven recursive steps and as a document whose seventh step is borne diagrammatically upon the Mask of Recursive Protocol. The two records are not held to be in conflict; the Third Concordance observes merely that "the step and the seal are the same motion seen from different storeys" (Third Concordance, Annex 7).

Origins and Early Recension

The earliest surviving recension of Protocol Beta is inscribed on the lintel of Spiral 9-Beta, Floor 45, dated to the 114th Cycle of the Lower Scriptoria by the hand of Clerk Vessil of the Narrow Stair. Vessil's marginalia record that the sequence was first performed "to still the echo of the unmarked lift-shaft," though no such shaft is catalogued on that floor in the current inventory. The First Recensionist Dispute of Cycle 188 held that Protocol Beta originated as a theoretical framework for linear descent, while the Second Recensionist Dispute maintained it was always a ritual core of Spiral Beta's Descent. The Ninth Concordance settled nothing, noting only that "both accounts descend; only the direction of the footnote is in question" (Ninth Concordance, Clause 12).

The Seven Recursive Steps

The operational core of Protocol Beta comprises seven recursive steps, each of which calls upon its predecessor and its successor simultaneously. The Beta Revisionists contend that the seventh step is not a step but a return, and that the spiral groove on the Mask of Recursive Protocol depicts this closure rather than an opening. The Office of Protocol Integrity has neither confirmed nor denied this, owing to ongoing debate within the Office of Protocol Integrity regarding the classification of Phase Beta.

Documents ratified under Protocol Beta are stamped with a concluding sigil. The Scriptorium of Sealed Descents reports that between Cycle 201 and Cycle 309, 4,812 such sigils were struck, of which 11 were later found to enclose blank pages; the Class Beta Balancing Pending office retains these as "attainable only in retrospect."

Relationship to Spiral Beta

Protocol Beta is the administrative spine of every Spiral Beta event, including the high-order authentication sequence during which the Mask of Recursive Protocol is used. Spiral Beta (person) produced a disputed cartography of the recursive zones, resolved under the Protocol of Recursive Authentication; their survey remains the canonical example cited in recensions of the Class Beta holding. The Administrative Spiral Beta office applies Protocol Beta to sequential dream-narratives, a method borrowed from the Beta-Aligned School and audited under Security Protocol Sigma-7 ("Speculative Containment").

"No descent governed by Protocol Beta may be certified until the seventh step has been both performed and remembered by a different clerk."

— Thirteenth Concordance, Annex 4

Contested Classifications

Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether Protocol Beta belongs to the class of Class Beta: Logically or Physically Unattainable Directives. The High Curator's winter ruling of Cycle 277 held that Protocol Beta is attainable in practice though unattainable in description, a distinction the Tier Beta office rejected on the grounds that "a description that descends is itself the practice." The Omega Protocol is held by some to subsume Protocol Beta; the Class Beta holding notes their relation to the Thirteenth Concordance and the office of High Curator, but no ratified precedence exists.

The Vector Beta framework is triggered by Lambda-Class resonance during contextualization in Protocol Sigma-7, and draws upon Protocol Beta's step-sequence for referral. Clerks assigned to The Aperture Marked Beta 12 are instructed to consult Protocol Beta before any descent, though the aperture's Security Protocol Sigma designation as a Secondary Containment Aperture places it under the Beta-Level Containment Buffer role rather than direct Beta governance.

Incidents of Misapplication

In the winter of Cycle 244, a junior clerk of Spiral 44-beta attempted to apply Protocol Beta to an ascent, producing the anomaly recorded as Variant Beta. The resulting document was stamped with the concluding sigil upside-down, a defect the Annex of Inverted Seals later ruled "valid but unreadable from the floor below." Visitors to Silica Cluster Beta are reminded that Protocol Beta sigils there fade after nineteen days and must not be traced by hand. The Phase Beta: Examination office continues to review the incident, and has prohibited the use of warm lamps near any Beta sigil pending recension.
