Progressive Unraveling

MS 8853.27 · Practices and doctrines

Definition and scope

Progressive Unraveling is one of the three primary categories of Unbinding Event recorded in the Tower's taxonomy of conceptual degradation. It describes a graduated decay of coherence in which a subject's traits become intermittent or contradictory before they cease altogether. Unlike abrupt severance, Progressive Unraveling is measurable over time; its progression has been charted, disputed, and re-charted under at least four Concordances without agreement on a canonical curve. The condition is distinguished from the other two categories of Unbinding Event by its directionality. Where Metric Dissipation erodes quantity and Clarity Depletion erodes legibility, Progressive Unraveling erodes the internal consistency of a subject's attributes — a thing does not fade, it begins to disagree with itself.

Stages of progression

The standard model, drawn from observations catalogued during the Crisis of the Unraveling Tapestry of Floor 7,001, describes four stages. The first, termed flattening, involves the loss of secondary characteristics. The second, intermittency, is marked by traits appearing and vanishing without pattern. The third, contradiction, is the point at which a subject simultaneously exhibits mutually exclusive properties. The fourth, threshold, is the moment at which intervention becomes impossible. The 0.85 Selvage Constant — the empirical determination made by M. Selvage during the Crisis — marks the boundary between the third and fourth stages. Falling coherence values below 0.85 indicate that the subject has entered irreversible decay. The measurement is named for M. Selvage, whose work established its practical application, though the underlying observation is credited in some recensions to an earlier, unnamed clerk of the Scriptorium of Floors.

Governance and response

Amendment Σ-22 of the Concordance mandates the Stabilization Cadre, a Tier Beta (Recursive) unit tasked with monitoring and containing bleed-through during episodes of Progressive Unraveling. The Cadre operates under the jurisdiction of the Progressive Indexers' Collective, though the precise division of authority between the two has been the subject of an unresolved dispute since Concordance 89 was first cited. Emergency Protocol Theta, drafted in the wake of the Crisis, provides for the sealing of affected floors and the transfer of holdings to provisional custody. Its invocation requires the approval of two Librarians, a requirement that has twice delayed response by more than a full day of Tower time.

"No subject shall be declared unravelled while any trait remains consistently observable across three consecutive inspection cycles, notwithstanding the appearance of contradiction in the interim."

— Concordance 41, Annex 9

This clause has been cited both as a protection against premature intervention and as an obstacle to timely containment, depending on which office is presenting the argument.

Theoretical disputes

The Pedantic Gradient school of analysis holds that all subjects exhibit minor intermittency under sufficient scrutiny, and that Progressive Unraveling is therefore a matter of degree rather than kind. This position is contested by the School of Ephemeral Cataloguing, which argues that a definable threshold exists and that conflating ordinary inconsistency with true unraveling produces unnecessary Cadre deployments. A separate line of inquiry, associated with the Progressive Cartography School, concerns the mapping of latent structures during the second stage. Cartographers of this tradition maintained that diagrams drawn of a subject in intermittency reveal its deeper architecture; the Progressive Indexing Guild, in its brief existence, dismissed this as aesthetic indulgence. Selena Moss, an Archivist-Luminary of note, has argued that the petrification observed in late-stage cases represents predictable thermodynamic unraveling rather than a superior state of stasis. Her position remains formally unadopted.

Incidents and notable cases

Beyond the Crisis of the Unraveling Tapestry of Floor 7,001, the Tower's records note an incident on Floor 11,340 in the winter of Y152, where a subject passed through all four stages in under six hours, faster than the Cadre's monitoring interval. The resulting bleed-through affected three adjacent floors and required emergency consolidation by the Progressive Indexers' Collective. A secondary review found that the inspection schedule had been adjusted the previous season to accommodate a clerk's rest period, a detail entered into the record without further comment. Visitors to affected floors are reminded that no item on display during an active Protocol Theta sealing may be handled, photographed, or described aloud in the presence of the subject.
