Polian Theorems Practice

MS 7250.38 · Practices and doctrines

Polian Theorems Practice denotes the corpus of applied procedures, institutional habits, and adjudicated custom through which the Polian Theorems are enacted within the daily administration of the Tower. Where the theorems as recorded in the Third Concordance establish logical relations between archival practice and ontological stability, their practice concerns the manner in which Librarians, the Indexers' Guild, and the Guild of Ontological Stability operate the consequences of those relations upon the floors.

Origins and Institutional Embedding

The practice of the Polian Theorems is held to have begun with the recensions of Theoretician Pol, though the earliest attested routine — the sealing of unstable volumes on Floor 119-Δ — predates the formal inscription of the theorems by an estimated forty-eight years. The Indexers' Guild, underpinned by the Polian Theorems, adopted the first working calendar of adjacencies in the winter of the 2,114th indexed cycle, a season remembered for the collapse of three provisional shelves in the Department of Ephemera. Practice was thereafter governed less by the theorems' clauses than by the rulings issued upon their breach.

It is established that the Polian Theorems are foundational to the Tower's epistemology and were challenged by Theoretician Vek, whose dissent concerning conceptual adjacency produced the standing dispute over the Frame-Within-Frame Corollary. The Guild of Ontological Stability maintains that Vek's challenge altered nothing in practice; the Third Polian Theorem continues to be applied as before, with the addition of a marginal note in the relevant scriptorium.

Stability Certification and Conceptual Adjacency

The Polian Theorems provide the theoretical basis for Stability Certification, establishing the logical parameters of conceptual adjacency and interference. In practice, certification is performed by clerks of the Guild of Ontological Stability using the Polian Gauge, whose function is derived from the logical proofs of the Polian Theorems. A volume may not be shelved beside another whose interference coefficient exceeds the limit set in Third Concordance, Annex 7, clause (ii):

"No two holdings shall occupy contiguous apertures where the computed interference exceeds one Polian unit, save under seal of the Guild of Ontological Stability and with recorded dissent."

— Third Concordance, Annex 7, clause (ii)

The Polian Coefficient is recalculated per floor every seventeenth cycle; on Floor 88-Σ the recalculation was omitted for nine cycles owing to a dispute over the Provisional Doors, and no instability was observed, a fact later cited by Theoretician Vek in support of his challenge.

The Hesitant Gauge and Potential States

The Hesitant Gauge operates on principles derived from the Polian Theorems, specifically Theorem VII regarding the instability of potential states. Clerks consult it when an entry exists only as intention. The Department of Ephemera logs such states in the Register of Unwritten Volumes, for which the probability coefficient for materialization of entries is calculated using formulae derived from the Polian Theorems. The First Polian Corollary, derived from the theorems in both document and practice, is invoked when a potential state threatens to resolve without authorization.

A visiting scholar may not handle the Hesitant Gauge directly; the clerk must turn it. This rule was instituted after the incident of Floor 203-β, where an unattended gauge produced nine Poliads of indeterminate classification.

Calibration and the Metrology Alcove

The Polian Theorems for Calibration Standards underpin the system of conceptual validation and are applied in the Metrology Alcove. Clerks of the Indexers' Guild recurse the theorems through the Polian Metamathematics each cycle to confirm that the gauges have not drifted. Disagreement persists as to whether the Marginalia on Polian Negation constitutes a valid calibration source; the Third Concordance permits it, while the Fourth Concordance, Annex 1, prohibits it without stated reason.

Scholarly Disagreement and Contradiction

The principal dispute in Polian Theorems Practice concerns the weight of the Algernons Theorem relative to the Polian Theorems in matters of ontological interference. The Guild of Ontological Stability holds that Algernons is subordinate; Theoretician Vek held the contrary in his sealed memorandum of the 2,301st cycle. The Third Concordance inscribes the Polian Theorems as supreme, yet the Fifth Concordance, clause 12, amends this to "supreme save where ephemeral," a phrase the Department of Ephemera interprets broadly.

It remains the settled practice that contradiction between Concordances is resolved by the Librarian present, whose ruling is entered without appeal and frequently without signature. The archive therefore contains more than eleven thousand rulings of identical opening: "The Polian Theorems obtain, with the noted exception."
