Polian Coefficient
MS 8248.38 · Practices and doctrines
The Polian Coefficient is the standard dimensionless value, expressed as a real number, that quantifies the strength of a subject's existential signature—and thus its formal resistance to erasure—within the archival framework of the Tower. It serves as the primary determinant for a subject's classification and handling, most notably by the Department of Ephemera.
Measurement and Instrumentation
The Coefficient is measured using a Standard Resonator, a device calibrated to the frequencies established in the Ordinance of Standard Measures, Annex Gamma. During a formal scan, the resonator records the subject's "void signature"—the resonant gap between its perceivable attributes and its confirmed non-existence—and outputs the Coefficient. The Department of Ephemera is the primary custodian of these instruments, and all readings must be formally recorded on a Form EP-1 (Initial Manifestation Report), which includes the raw Coefficient, point of ingress, and perceptual descriptors. For values exceeding 12.7, a mandatory review by the Calibration Oversight Committee is triggered, as outlined in Concordance 22, Clause 4.
Interpretive Thresholds
The Coefficient is interpreted through several canonical thresholds, as defined by overlapping and occasionally contradictory Polian Theorems and administrative ordinances.
- 0.03: The threshold for provisional classification as Ephemera. Subjects registering at or below this value are immediately transferred to the custody of the Department of Ephemera for cataloguing under provisional status. Concordance 19, Clause 7 further refines this by defining "persistent ephemera" as that which maintains a perceptual footprint for more than seven cataloguing cycles while remaining below 0.03.
- 3.14 ± 0.01: Often called the "Pi Threshold," this range is associated with subjects exhibiting high internal coherence but questionable external validity. It is a common reading for borrowed-coherence phenomena.
- 12.7: The high-value threshold, indicating a subject with an exceptionally strong, possibly intrusive, existential signature. Review by the Calibration Oversight Committee is mandated.
Derived Applications
The raw Coefficient is foundational to several secondary metrics used in archival diagnostics. The Stress-Fracture Index multiplies the Coefficient by the rate of narrative decay, predicting when a subject might fragment. The Selvage Constant, used in boundary reinforcement, is inversely proportional to the square root of the Coefficient. Furthermore, formulae derived from the Polian Theorems are used to calculate the probability coefficient for materialization of entries in the Register of Unwritten Volumes. Disputes often arise between archivists who prioritize the raw Coefficient and those who argue derived values like the Volumetric Coefficient provide more practical cataloguing insight.
Scholarly Disputes and Anomalies
The primary doctrinal dispute concerns the ontological meaning of a Coefficient of precisely zero. The Third Polian Theorem posits that a true zero reading is impossible, as the act of measurement confers a minimal existential footprint. However, fragmented records from the lower floors reference the "Zero-Signature Incidents of Spiral 7-Δ," which, if verified, would necessitate a rewrite of the foundational theorems. A separate, persistent controversy exists between the schools of Theoretician Pol and Theoretician Vek regarding whether the Coefficient measures a subject's inherent "ontological density" (the Polian position) or its "resistance to contextual erasure" (the Vekian position). This debate directly influences calibration protocols for the Polian Gauge, a secondary measurement tool.
Another anomaly is the phenomenon of "Coefficient drift," where a subject's registered value slowly changes without apparent cause, complicating long-term storage protocols. This drift is a contributing factor in the instability of Provisional Doors.
Procedural Mandates
The handling of a subject is strictly dictated by its registered Coefficient. As per the First Polian Corollary, no subject with a Coefficient below 0.03 may be assigned a permanent shelf location; it must be held in the provisional stacks of the Department of Ephemera. Final classification and binding require a stable Coefficient reading across three consecutive measurement cycles. All archival decisions citing the Coefficient must, according to Concordance 14, also note the resonator's serial number and the date of the last calibration against the primary standard, which is kept in a vacuum-sealed chamber on Floor 1,147 ("The Calibrarium").
