Perpetual Echo
MS 0420.25 · Practices and doctrines
The Perpetual Echo is the foundational physical principle and administrative category governing all acousto-phenomenological structures within the Tower, formalized by the Ordinance of Perpetual Echo in Scribing Year 11904. It describes the property of certain sonic imprints, or Echo Sounds, to sustain themselves indefinitely without external energy input, provided they are contained within a sanctioned resonance medium such as Echo-Glass or a properly calibrated Echo Archive chamber. The Perpetual Echo is not a singular sound but a state of being; it is the condition of absolute acoustic permanence against which all other sonic phenomena are measured and catalogued.
Core Tenets
The Ordinance established three immutable tenets, often called the Pillars of Permanence:
- Imprint: An Echo achieves perpetuity only upon its formal Imprint, a ceremony conducted by a Senior Librarian of Echoic Affairs within a primary containment sphere.
- Resonance: A Perpetual Echo must resonate in harmonic sympathy with the Aggregate Echo Map, the Tower's master frequency index. Echoes demonstrating dissonance greater than 0.03 sigma are subject to voidance.
- Manifestation: Perpetuity is not merely recorded but must be actively manifested; the Echo must be audibly present at its designated listening aperture at every Decadal Reverification, or its status is revoked.
Containment and Sustenance
Sustaining a Perpetual Echo requires specialized infrastructure, primarily housed on Floor 307 (Chamber of Perpetual Echo). Approved containment vessels include Grade-AAA Echo-Glass spirals, Echo Crystal latticeworks, and sealed Echo-Stratifications. According to Echo Containment protocols, each vessel undergoes secondary tempering under Clause IX of the Ordinance and is inscribed with its unique resonance signature. The Echo is not self-powered in a conventional sense; rather, it draws sustaining energy from the "background hum" of the Tower itself, a concept detailed in the annexes to the Ordinance concerning Echo Sourcing.
The Aggregate Echo
The collective sum of all sanctioned Perpetual Echoes is termed the Aggregate Echo. It functions as both a catalog and a physical acoustic field, maintained in a dedicated sub-chamber of Floor 307. All prospective Echoes are checked against the Aggregate for prior registration, voided frequencies, or contraindicated harmonic profiles. The Quelling of the Unnumbered Echo was a direct result of an unsanctioned echo attempting to embed itself within the Aggregate without proper Imprint, leading to the formal ratification of the Ordinance.
Administrative Oversight
Jurisdiction over the Perpetual Echo falls to the Office of Echoic Permanence, a branch of the Librarians. Their duties include conducting the mandatory Decadal Reverifications, authorizing new Imprints, and managing the Echo Archive. A significant portion of their work involves adjudicating the Echo Primacy Debate—disputes over whether a newly discovered echo qualifies as a novel Perpetual Echo or is merely a parasitic resonance of an existing one, such as the Grand Echo.
Scholarly Disputes
While the Ordinance is definitive, its interpretation is not. A central controversy, referenced in Concordance 811, concerns the "Decay Paradox." Measurements indicate that even Perpetual Echoes exhibit infinitesimal frequency drift over millennial scales (approximately 1 x 10 Hz per Tower-century). One school of thought, led by the Archivists of the Echo-Dreaming Guild, holds this is a measurement artifact. The rival school, the Resonance Realists, argues it proves true perpetuity is a theoretical ideal, not an achievable state, and that all Echoes are in a state of infinitely slow dissolution. This debate impacts practical matters, such as the recalibration schedules for Echo-lines and the legal definition of "permanent" within the archive.
Manifestation in the Lower Floors
Outside the specialized chambers of Floor 307, Perpetual Echoes manifest in regulated ways. Designated listening galleries on Floors 14, 422, and 9001 allow for controlled auditory access. Furthermore, the principles of the Perpetual Echo are employed in non-acoustic archives; the steady-state luminescence of the Galleries of Fixed Shadow on Floor 506, for instance, is officially classified as a "photo-acoustic Perpetual Echo" under a broad interpretation of Clause 7, Annex Omega.
