Pace per Second Squared
MS 1598.76 · Practices and doctrines
Pace per Second Squared (PPS), also known as the Concordant Unit of Accelerative Measure, is the fundamental derived unit of acceleration used throughout The Tower for administrative and structural engineering purposes. It is defined as the uniform change in velocity of one canonical pace per second, per second of Tower time. The unit's adoption is formalized in the Seventy-Second Concordance, Annex Δ, which standardizes all kinematic calculations related to the maintenance of vertical transit systems and the stability of the archive stacks.
Definition and Derivation
The PPS is derived from the Tower's base units of length and time. One canonical pace, as codified by the embedded tiles of the Striding Aisle, is precisely 0.762 meters. Tower second is defined by the periodic oscillation of the Great Pendulum on Floor 72 (Whispering Stacks). Thus, an acceleration of 1 PPS equates to a velocity change of 0.762 m/s every second. This unit is considered essential for calculating the stresses on cantilevered reading platforms, the safe descent rates for cargo lifts, and the kinematic profiles mandated for Spiral Gardener ascension ceremonies.
Administrative Applications
The primary bureaucratic utility of the PPS is in assessing Administrative Velocity and its rate of change, a key metric for Departmental efficacy. A department whose output, measured in CDGI, shows a positive acceleration is said to be in a state of "Concordant Momentum." Conversely, deceleration (negative PPS) triggers a review under Clause 14 of the Third Concordance. The Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance, for instance, is required to maintain a minimum positive acceleration of 0.05 PPS in its reporting cadence during flood season, as per the Manual of Hydrographic Protocol.
Structural and Safety Regulations
Structural integrity ordinances frequently specify maximum allowable accelerations. For example, the sway of any freestanding stack exceeding 50 libra in mass must not experience lateral accelerations greater than 0.2 PPS during a standard ventilation cycle. The Obsidian Decree implicitly relies on PPS calculations in its provisions regarding the "sudden and violent displacement of air," which is a function of the acceleration of a clerk's gesture. Furthermore, the remediation of discontinuities in ascent conduits, as demanded by Concordance 311, requires engineers to calculate the acceleration profiles of repair teams to ensure they do not exceed safe climbing limits.
The Great Recessional Debate
The PPS was at the heart of the [[|Great Recessional Debate of Cycle 34,221]]. The original text of the Third Concordance prescribed a "brisk, purposeful pace" for exiting the Sounding Gallery. A faction of chronometrists argued this phrase implied a specific, constant acceleration (approximately 0.15 PPS from a standing start) to achieve the intended briskness within the allotted recessional length. The traditionalists held that only a final velocity mattered. The Synod ultimately amended the procedural annexes to specify a velocity, not an acceleration, but the debate cemented PPS as the standard for analyzing all motion-related ordinances.
Calibration and Dispute
The official calibration standard for the PPS is the Acceleration Trolley on Floor 881, whose operational status remains 'Provisional, Awaiting Calibration.' This circular dependency—the unit being defined by a device that requires the unit for its own calibration—is a classic Tower paradox. Consequently, practical field measurements often refer to the "De Facto PPS," derived from timed rolls down the precisely graded Renal Rapids' inspection ramps, a method sanctioned—though not codified—by the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance. Disagreement between the "Annex Ω-7 Standard" and the "Fluvial Derivative" can reach up to 0.8%, leading to frequent arbitration by the Synod of Minor Archivists.
Related Units
PPS forms the basis for other derived units. The Concordant Newton (CN) is defined as the force required to accelerate one libra of archival parchment at a rate of 1 PPS. The Administrative Stress Vector (ASV), expressed in librums per square archivolt (lbm/arch), is fundamentally a pressure measurement derived from force (in CN) over area. Thus, the entire edifice of the Tower's engineering and bureaucratic physics rests upon the consistent application of Pace per Second Squared.
