Originating Stamp
MS 0431.90 · Objects and instruments
The Originating Stamp is the foundational administrative instrument used to indelibly record the "birth" of a subject into the documented reality of the Tower. Its application constitutes the initial, and often only, formal recognition that a subject is eligible for cataloguing, thereby granting it ontological standing within the archive's purview. The stamp’s physical impression, which bears the unique Ir Number & Date of Logging, is considered the primary evidence of a submission's existence prior to its potential escalation to more permanent statuses, such as that conferred by the Ontic Stamp or the Infinite Stamp.
Physical Specifications and Protocol
The stamp itself is a brass cylinder measuring 4.7 cm in diameter and 9.2 cm in height, housed within the Originating Departmentagency. Its face is engraved with a complex border of interlocking gears surrounding a central field left blank for the variable data of the Ir Number & Date. The application process is governed by Concordance 12-δ, Annex C, which stipulates that the stamp may only be wielded by a certified Clerk of the Second Order after a preliminary review of the submission's docket for "minimum coherence." The ink used is a fast-drying, indelible black formulation, Batch G-44, produced exclusively in the Ledger Halls' scriptorium. A successful impression is defined as one where all border elements are visible and the logged data is fully legible; a smudged or partial impression requires the immediate generation of a Γ-stamped (Γ-stamp (Gamma)) incident report.
Ontological Implications
The act of stamping does not, in itself, guarantee a subject's eventual inclusion in a permanent catalogue. Rather, it creates a provisional "holding cell" within the Tower's bureaucratic machinery. As Senior Archivist L. Finch noted in Prolegomena to the Incomplete Catalogue, "The Originating Stamp marks not the beginning of a thing, but the beginning of the Tower's awareness of the possibility of a thing." This distinction is critical to understanding the Procedural Exhaustion Hypothesis, which posits that a significant majority of stamped dockets will exhaust their procedural momentum before achieving full ontic status, becoming part of the vast substratum of "potentially real" entities that form the Tower's foundation.
The Stamp originates nothing but a file. Yet, from that file, entire spirals may—or may not—unfold.
Jurisdictional Disputes and the Kludge
The authority of the Originating Stamp is occasionally challenged by submissions that exhibit properties aligning with multiple, contradictory departmental mandates. Concordance 7-ω famously attempted to resolve such conflicts through a tripartite review, but the process proved so cumbersome it led to the Gamma Aperture Incident. In practice, clerks often resort to applying a provisional Kludge Stamp to the originating docket, legitimizing its contradictory claims for a specified review period. This practice, while unsanctioned by any formal Concordance, is widely tolerated as a necessary lubricant for the machinery of intake. Disputes that cannot be resolved by Kludge are typically escalated to the Bureau of Epistolary Echoes, where they may languish indefinitely.
Relationship to Other Stamps
The Originating Stamp is the first in a theoretical hierarchy of authentication, though this hierarchy is more descriptive than procedural. It is distinct from the Infinite Stamp, which is used for authorizing amendments, verifying regressive petitions, and other advanced bureaucratic functions. The Ontic Stamp represents a separate track altogether, administered by the Department of Ontic Prefiguration for subjects that have passed a far more rigorous assessment of their "reality-potential." A common point of scholarly contention, per the arguments in Echo Sound Vol. XII, is whether a subject that receives an Ontic Stamp must, by logical necessity, have first received an Originating Stamp. The prevailing view, supported by a narrow reading of Concordance 44-7.B, is that it must, though no such stamped precursor document has ever been publicly recorded, leading to the so-called "Paradox of the Un-originated Real."
Archival Footprint
Every application of the Originating Stamp generates three documents: the original stamped docket (held by the submitting agency), a vellum copy (archived under the relevant Ir Number in the Ledger Halls), and a whisper-thin tissue duplicate (deposited in the Spiral 719 repository for atmospheric analysis). The tissue copies are particularly valued by researchers studying the "paper-thin" boundary between catalogued and uncatalogued reality. It is estimated that the total mass of Originating Stamp tissue copies now exceeds the structural weight of the Ledger Halls themselves, a fact that has prompted several unsuccessful petitions, stamped with the Infinite Stamp, to amend the relevant material retention protocols.
