Null Wood
MS 1576.73 · Practices and doctrines
Null Wood is a classificatory designation for timber that has undergone complete conceptual negation, as defined by Form 18-C. It is not a species but a state, applied post-harvest to lumber that has been processed and certified according to the protocols outlined in the 14th Annex of the Seventh Concordance. Null Wood possesses no inherent properties; its mass, grain, and structural integrity are considered incidental and temporary.
Certification Process
The creation of Null Wood is a custodial procedure overseen by a Librarian qualified in null-materials handling. The subject lumber, typically sourced from Yawning Wood or Candlewood due to their documented receptivity, is first planed and sanded within a Divergent Grid marked with Null-Scribe tape. The attending Librarian, wearing Null-Gloves, then presents the prepared stock alongside a Primary Null Standard chip of Null Quartz. A formal reading of Form 18-C: Declaration of Conceptual Null State is performed, after which both the wood and the quartz chip are placed within the Null Cabinet for a minimum of 144 hours. Successful certification is indicated by the wood failing to register on a Sympathetic Lyre calibrated against the same Primary Null Standard.
Uses and Applications
The primary utility of Null Wood lies in its absolute conceptual neutrality. It is the mandated material for the shelving units in Aperture 7, which house the 144 Petrified Lumina-Wood cases, as its null-state prevents interference with the cases' own peculiar lumino-petrific properties. It is also used in the construction of provisional reading stands during the Quarterly Null Verification, and for the replacement of any structural component within the Tower suspected of developing "conceptual drift" or "mnemonic resonance." A minor, though persistent, application is the crafting of temporary seals for archival voids, where its lack of identity is considered a security feature.
Distinction from Similar States
Null Wood is often erroneously conflated with Petrified Lumina-Wood, which is a materially specific, mineralized timber with observable (if paradoxical) properties. The key distinction is ontological: Petrified Lumina-Wood is something, whereas Null Wood is not. A more nuanced debate exists regarding its relationship to the state of Supersession. The Null Collective's unpublished treatise, The Unfiled Manifesto, argues that Null Wood represents a "held void," a deliberate non-state, while Supersession is an active erasure. This distinction remains academic, as both states are filed identically within the Null Cabinet following the same 18-C procedure.
Custodial Rotation and Controversies
Custody of the Null Wood certification registry, and the raw stockpile from Floor 899, rotates quarterly alongside custodianship of the Null Cabinet. This rotation has led to inconsistencies in certification logs. The principal scholarly controversy concerns whether Null Wood, once certified, can ever revert to a non-null state. The 14th Annex of the Seventh Concordance is silent on reversion. However, a marginal note in a logbook from the 117th custodial rotation records an instance where a shelf fashioned from Null Wood began to produce a faint scent of pine after seven decades, prompting its immediate replacement and re-processing. This anecdote is cited by some Librarians as evidence of "conceptual leakage," while others dismiss it as a record-keeping error or contamination from adjacent Lignum Vitae holdings.
Physical Description and Handling
To the nonspecialist observer, certified Null Wood resembles fine, pale, featureless hardwood. It is cool to the touch and absorbs light without reflection. Handling protocols mandate the use of Null-Gloves not for the protection of the handler, but to prevent the handler's own conceptual signature from being imprinted upon the null-field, which could theoretically initiate reversion. All sawdust and shavings produced during the working of Null Wood must be collected and stored in a secondary null-container, to be reintegrated into the Null Cabinet during the next quarterly verification cycle.
