Northwest Spiral

MS 1050.65 · Places and structures

Northwest Spiral is the designation for a composite vertical access structure comprising the Northwest Spiral Staircase, the adjacent Northwest Spiral Annex, and the discontinuous shaft known as the Northwest Spiral Void, all situated within the northwest quadrant of the Tower's undefined mid-reaches. The Northwest Spiral is administered jointly by the Guild of Framers and Demarcators and the Office of Stairwell Registry, a coexistence formalised by the Sixth Concordance, Clause 12.9, and contested in twenty-three subsequent rulings.

Topography and Numbering

The Northwest Spiral is not a single floor sequence but a braided route whose constituent threads are numbered according to no reconstructed logic. The Northwest Spiral Staircase enters at Floor 4,112, Spiral 22, adjacent to Aperture 37-G in the Northwest Administrative Wing, sub-corridor 7, alcove 12, and is recorded as terminating without notice at Floor 4,447, where the Northwest Carillon would ordinarily be expected but is not, the nearest such instrument being the Hermetic Carillon on an unstated level. The Concordance of Bearings holds that the Spiral's bearing "does not resolve to a cardinal point under any reading permitted by this document," a position upheld against the objection of the North-Eastern Stairwell Spire, which filed a dissent on 9 August 604.

Administrative History

The Office of Stairwell Registry opened its file on the Northwest Spiral on 4 March 611, three days after the parallel file on the North-Northwest Stairwell and has never closed either. The Guild of Framers and Demarcators rejected the Registry's original designation "Spiral Oblique Northwest-by-Unspoken" as unpronounceable, a ruling entered in the Guild's Red Book of Rejections, folio 88. A clerk of the Registry, one Vellum Scrivener Oth, lodged a grievance in 619 protesting that the Guild had "usurped the silent nomenclature," a grievance the Seventh Concordance, Clause 44.2, later cited indirectly in the dispute between the Northwest Spiral Staircase and the Northwest Helical Accessway, though the clause does not name Oth.

The Spiral Void and Its Inventory

The Northwest Spiral Void is a shaft lacking floors, rails, or measurable depth, first catalogued by the Atelier of Permanent Impressions during its occupation of the northwest annex of Floor 506. An inventory submitted to the Office of Stairwell Registry on 12 February 633 lists the following objects recovered from the Void's lip:

The Latitudinal Lurch of Floor 88 is held by some scriptoria to extend faintly into the lower Spiral, causing due north to lean 4.7 degrees towards west-northwest, though the Concordance of Bearings denies any such extension.

Scholarly Disagreement

A persistent controversy concerns whether the Northwest Spiral includes the North-Northwest Stairwell, the northernmost of the four oblique stairwells serving the ward of Floor 19-B. The Guild of Framers and Demarcators asserts inclusion by the Principle of Adjacent Obliquity; the Office of Stairwell Registry rejects this on the grounds that the Stairwell's bearing fails the Concordance of Bearings. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, observes only:

"That which spirals and that which obliques share a wall and not a definition."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

The Sixth Concordance contradicts the Third by assigning shared custody, a contradiction the Seventh Concordance leaves unamended.

Notable Incidents

On 30 November 702, a winter of recorded silence, the Northwest Carillon on Floor 1201 — wherein Fact 188 is kept — was heard to ring with a sound of perfect silence precisely as a clerk crossed the Northwest Spiral Staircase, an event the Office of Stairwell Registry filed as "corroborative of nothing." Visitors to the Spiral are prohibited from carrying open inkwells above Floor 4,200, as the Guild of Framers and Demarcators has determined that descending droplets invalidate the spiral's numbering upon contact.

The Northwest Spiral remains, in the words of the Second Concordance, "a route best consulted and rarely taken," a description the Seventh Concordance amends only by striking the word "rarely."
