Nodal Register

MS 5066.42 · Documents and ordinances

The Nodal Register (Registry Designation NR-α7) is the primary log of deviations in the recurrence cycle of the Granite Intrusion. Maintained by the Clerks of the Granite Step, its entries provide the foundational data for calculating Nodal Units (NU), calibrating the Sigma Array, and informing policy under the Procedures for Inter-Nodal Resonance, Third Concordance, Clause 17.β.

Physical Form and Location

The Register resides on Floor 419, the Granite Step, within a climate-stabilized vault adjacent to the Resonance Chamber. It is bound in seventeen volumes of slate-grey tegument, each page a single, continuous sheet of pressure-laminated quartzite. Entries are inscribed via diamantine stylus, producing grooves that refract ambient crystalline light, making the text legible only under the specific luminescence mandated by the Vigil Register for archival review. A certified, searchable duplicate, the Ancillary Register, is housed on Floor 312 for general clerical access.

Entry Protocol

An event qualifies for entry into the Nodal Register upon the confirmation of a haplotype recurrence with a deviation exceeding 0.47 Nodal Units from the predicted sigma-wave. The witnessing Clerk must file Form NR-δ12 (“Declaration of Nodal Variance”) within three tolls of the central carillon. This form requires notarization by a separate Clerk and validation against the Register of Manifestations to confirm the materialization was not a prior catalogued anomaly. Once validated, the entry is inscribed, recording the floor of occurrence, the exact deviation in NU, the haplotype signature, and the assigned Case Vortex (e.g., CV-419-88).

Analytical Use

The compiled data of the Nodal Register serves multiple administrative functions. Biannually, the Clerks of the Granite Step use the register’s trend analysis to advocate for the re-tuning of the Sigma Array, as stipulated (and frequently contested) under the Ninth Concordance. The logarithmic scale of Nodal Units (NU), officially codified in Clause 17.β of the Third Concordance, was derived from correlations first observed in the Register’s early volumes. Furthermore, the Register feeds the Register of Unanswered Questions, as persistent deviation patterns are reclassified as ontological inquiries rather than measurement errors.

Controversies and Amendments

The authority of the Nodal Register is not absolute and is subject to several ongoing disputes. The Register of Ephemeral Statutes periodically issues challenges to its methodology, most notably in Statute E-712.4, which argued that the 0.47 NU threshold for entry was arbitrarily derived from the dimensions of the original Granite Step and not from any fundamental resonance principle. Furthermore, cross-referencing with the Register of Irregular Acquisitions has revealed seventeen instances where a logged recurrence was subsequently determined to be a mis-catalogued item from a higher floor, calling into question the ontological purity of certain entries. These controversies are themselves logged in the Precedent Register.

Related Registers and Documents

The Nodal Register exists within a complex ecosystem of linked records. It draws validating data from the Materials Register and the Register of Manifestations. Its conclusions influence entries in the Ontological Register and the Register of Standing Requests. Proposals for its amendment or supersession must be filed through the Register of Docketed Intent. According to the Manual of Procedural Cartography, any analytical map derived from the Nodal Register that exceeds seven nodal degrees of separation from a primary entry must be escalated for an Extended Ontological Review.
