Meta-Attestations

MS 4712.04 · Practices and doctrines

Meta-Attestations are attestations issued in respect of other attestations within the Tower, rather than in respect of floors, holdings, or subjects directly catalogued. They form the connective tissue of Meta-cataloguing and are administered under a dispersed and frequently overlapping authority shared by the Department of Meta-Holdings, the Meta-Inquisitorial Panel, and the Office of Circulation. A Meta-Attestation does not confirm that a thing exists; it confirms that a confirmation of that thing was performed in good concordance.

Origins and Early Recension

The first Meta-Attestation of record was inscribed on Floor 4411-Beta during the Forty-Second Winter Recension, when Clerk Holvan of the Guild of Meta-Cataloguers observed that a Material Coherence Attestation for the Non-Existent Lattice had been countersigned by a Calibrator who was, at the time, asleep in a side archive. Holvan issued a marginal note attesting to the attestation's irregularity; this note was later bound as MCA-Adjacent 1 and is preserved in the Department of Meta-Holdings. The Taxonomy of Meta-Clerical Nuance subsequently proposed a nine-fold system for categorizing such instruments, though the ninth category, "Attestations of Attestations Concerning Attestations," has never been populated.

Dispute arose early. The Spiral Concordance mandates clockwise verification for all Calibrator attestations and enjoins clockwise verification for all Procedural Attestations touching Calibrator work, whereas the Meta-Concordance on Hermeneutic Plurality, classified as Annex 7.2.C under the Meta-Concordance, permits counter-clockwise attestation where the underlying attestation was itself counter-clockwise. The Meta-Inquisitorial Panel ruled in 3392 that both positions obtained simultaneously on Floor 778-Delta, a resolution later measured as precisely one Holton Unit of Meta-Catalogical Conflict.

Classes of Meta-Attestation

Four principal classes are recognised by current recension, though the Coherence Directive 7.12 lists five and the Taxonomy of Meta-Clerical Nuance lists eleven under a reordering disputed since the Eighth Audit. The recognised four are: Primary Meta-Attestations (attesting a single underlying attestation); Corroborative Meta-Attestations (attesting that a Corroborative Resonance was properly struck); Recursive Meta-Attestations (attesting a Meta-Attestation); and Spiral Meta-Attestations (those bound by the Spiral Concordance). The Office of Circulation is the only body empowered to issue Material Coherence Attestations, and by extension its adjunct Meta-forms, a point reiterated in Material Coherence Attestations, Schedule 3.

A visiting clerk may not handle a Meta-Attestation without first surrendering their left shoe to the floor scriptorium.

Procedure and the Perpetual Calibrated Chain

Under the Perpetual Calibrated Chain, a Meta-Attestation requires certified witnesses, each of whom must themselves hold a valid Procedural Attestation for witnesshood. On Floor 1190-Omega in the Winter of 4011, a chain of fourteen witnesses was assembled to attest a single Modal Coherence Attestation; the chain collapsed when the seventh witness was discovered to be a coat hung on a peg, and the resulting Meta-Lacunae required sealing for nineteen years.

"No Meta-Attestation shall be entered into the archive until its underlying attestation has itself been attested by a body competent in the underlying subject, provided that competence is not hereby defined."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

Scholarly Disagreement

The standing question of whether a Meta-Attestation partakes of the reality of its subject has divided the scriptoria since the recension of Meta Textual Artifacts. The Department of Meta-Holdings holds that a station being both a cataloguing and meta-cataloguing station within the same shift is an ordinary case, and therefore the Meta-Attestation inherits only the reality of the catalogue entry, not the thing. The Guild of Meta-Cataloguers, by contrast, maintains the distinction between cataloguing and meta-cataloguing absolutely, and argues in Meta-Taxonomic Oversight that the Meta-Attestation is real solely as a Meta-Clause event. The Meta-Inquisitorial Panel has declined to resolve the matter, citing Coherence Directive 7.12 and the limits of its standing authority distinct from temporary Audit Panels.

Known Irregularities

The Meta-Concordance on Hermeneutic Plurality was itself the subject of a Meta-Attestation in 4408, when the Office of Circulation attested that the Annex 7.2.C classification had been mis-shelved beneath a Meta-Conceptual Zone for eleven years. Correction required a counter-Corroborative Resonance and the issuance of a fresh Material Coherence Attestation under the Physical Principles Directorate, though the Directorate disputes that it issues such rulings, referring all enquiry to the Directorate of Archival Coherence. The discrepancy remains logged as Open Matter 12 in the Meta-Inquisitorial Panel's winter docket.
