Meta-Concordance on Hermeneutic Plurality
MS 4117.30 · Documents and ordinances
Jurisdictional Scope and Key Provisions
The Meta-Concordance’s primary jurisdiction extends to all cataloging activities where two or more "hermeneutic streams"—defined as coherent systems for assigning meaning—produce divergent, yet internally consistent, results. It does not adjudicate which stream is "correct," but rather establishes protocols for their parallel documentation. Key provisions include:
- Principle of Contingent Coherence: A hermeneutic stream is deemed valid if it demonstrates internal logical consistency across a minimum of three cataloged items within a single meta-category (as per The Eleventh Concordance).
- Mandate of Dueling Registers: Items subject to hermeneutic plurality must be accessioned in duplicate, with each instance cataloged according to a distinct, recognized stream. These duplicates are stored in spatially separate registers, typically within the same floor or annex.
- Protocol for Stream Recognition: Formal recognition of a new hermeneutic stream requires petition to the Meta-Inquisitorial Panel, accompanied by a "Proof of Plural Yield"—a demonstration that the new stream produces catalog entries meaningfully divergent from, yet not destructive to, existing entries.
Operationalization and the Lambda Register
The practical application of the Meta-Concordance is most visible in the management of artifacts exhibiting "hermeneutic resonance," a state where an object’s catalogable properties shift in response to the interpretive lens applied. As mandated by Concordance 12.1.7, all such items are routed to the Department of Ambiguous Ontologies, where they are processed according to the Dueling Registers clause. The original accession records for these procedures are then sealed under the Lambda Register, a cryptographic archive accessible only to Senior Meta-Librarians.
A canonical example is the treatment of the Self-Excluding Inventory (PA-882). Under the Axiomatic School stream, it is cataloged as a "procedural paradox, grade 7." Under the Traditionalist School stream, it is listed as a "recursive index of non-presence." Both entries are considered equally true for administrative purposes, and the physical (or quasi-physical) artifact is housed in a superposition chamber on Floor 422, accessible via the Hermeneutic Stairwell.
Scholarly Dispute: Genesis vs. Codification
A significant academic controversy surrounds the Meta-Concordance’s relationship to prior precedent. The Genesis School argues the document merely codified pre-existing, ad-hoc practices that emerged spontaneously from conflicts like the Moss-Growth Spire Schism, citing the schism’s establishment of "concurrent investigative streams" as a direct precursor. The Codification School contends it is a genuinely novel legislative act that created the very concept of state-sanctioned interpretive plurality, arguing that pre-Concordance disputes were resolved through suppression of minority views, not their validation.
This debate is often fought over the interpretation of Clause 31 of the Meta-Concordance, which references "previously latent structures of understanding." Genesis scholars read this as an acknowledgment of legacy practices; Codification scholars insist it is a rhetorical device to legitimize a radical break.
Impact on Meta-Catalogical Conflict
The Meta-Concordance fundamentally altered the management of Meta-Catalogical Conflict. Prior to its ratification, such conflicts were seen as failures of methodology to be resolved by hierarchical decree. Post-ratification, they are often treated as evidence of a rich "hermeneutic ecosystem." The Coherence Directive 7.12 now guides the Meta-Inquisitorial Panel in applying the Meta-Concordance’s principles, requiring the Panel to first determine if a conflict arises from legitimate plurality before moving to resolution protocols.
This has led to the peculiar bureaucratic phenomenon of "conflict cultivation," where Librarians of the Office of Meta-Glossary intentionally apply opposing hermeneutic streams to newly discovered ambiguous items to stimulate the generation of new, legally-recognized plural interpretations, thereby expanding the Tower’s conceptual terrain.
Annexes and Contemporary Amendments
The core Meta-Concordance is supported by seven annexes, the most frequently cited being Annex Theta (on script plurality, which builds upon the chaotic legacy of the Seventh Concordance, Annex Theta) and Annex Gamma (which explicitly validates the differing measurement sets within Spiral 88-Gamma as per the Concordance of Methodological Plurality). Amendments are proposed through the Office of Meta-Glossary, which calculates the "conceptual adjacency" of any change to the existing web of Meta-Clauses. Since its ratification, the Meta-Concordance has been amended forty-two times, most recently in LC 932 to incorporate provisions for "temporal hermeneutics" arising from artifacts in the MRAK.
