Marginalia of Arsinoe

MS 3728.26 · Practices and doctrines

Marginalia of Arsinoe denotes the body of annotations, corrections, and incidental notations attributed to Arsinoe and, more broadly, to Arsinoe of the Seventh Silence, preserved across the holdings of the Marginalia collection and the records of the Marginalia Registry. The corpus is principally associated with the compilation of the Index of Unspoken Prefaces at the Gilded Quire, and is held by the Department of Marginalia to constitute the earliest recoverable instance of the Arsinoe Cycle in written form.

Provenance and Custody

The Marginalia of Arsinoe first enters the catalogue through the Partial Survey of the Seventh Concordance, whose appended inventories describe marginalia "in the hand of the mid-tier archivist" within the living quarters of Arsinoe. Custody was later transferred to the Clerks of the Marginalia following the ruling of the Synod of Marginalia in the year 881 of the Lower Reckoning, which assigned all notations touching the Quiet Forge to the Marginalia School for study. A second transfer, contested, moved the physical leaves to Floor 1194-Ω, where they remain under the seal of the Marginalia Registry. The Marginalia Log records that eleven leaves were briefly mis-filed as Marginalia on Polian Negation between the winters of 904 and 907.

"No notation of Arsinoe shall be read aloud upon a stairwell, lest the shape of the unsaid be disturbed before its inscription."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4, Clause 12

Content and Method

The annotations are characterised by the methodology of "listening to the shape of the unsaid," credited to Arsinoe in her capacity as Curator of the Quiet Forge. The Curator coined the term "Gilded Quandary" within a marginal note to the Index of Unspoken Prefaces, and the paradox thereby named is held by the Arsinoetan school of acoustic philosophy to originate in these pages. The Marginalia Syntax office has determined that 63 percent of the notations employ a retrograde ellipse now standard to the discipline; the remainder use the forward breach, prohibited after the Schism of the Annotated Marginalia.

Relation to the Arsinoe Cycle

The Arsinoe Cycle is a recurring pattern of administrative and ontological perturbations centered on Arsinoe of the Seventh Silence. The foundational texts associated with her, including the Marginalia of Arsinoe, are theorized by the Marginalia School to synchronize with the Cycle when subjected to intensive revision. The On Marginalia and Meaning treatise holds that each recension of the marginalia precipitates a measurable quieting of the Quiet Forge for a period not exceeding nineteen days. The Incident of the Selfwriting Marginalia of 912 is attributed by the Department of Marginalia to an overzealous copying of these very leaves.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether the Marginalia of Arsinoe and the marginalia of the Arsinoe Cycle are distinct corpora. The Second Concordance states plainly that "the hand of Arsinoe and the silence of Arsinoe are one record" (Clause 3, Schedule B), whereas the Fifth Concordance amends this to declare them "separate bindings under a single seal" (Annex 1, Clause 9). The Marginalia Registry has declined to adjudicate, noting only that "both readings appear in the Marginalia Log without contradiction of the seal." A visiting clerk from the Department of Marginalia may not bring ink of a colour other than slate-grey into the reading chamber.

Preservation and Access

The leaves are housed in the climate of Floor 1194-Ω, maintained at a constant 11 degrees by the Marginalia Registry under the Third Concordance. Requests for consultation are processed through the Clerks of the Marginalia and require the counter-seal of the Synod of Marginalia for any notation dated after the Schism of the Annotated Marginalia. The Marginalia Syntax office publishes an annual recension; the current edition, Recension XXII, corrects a mis-attribution of the Gilded Quandary note to a junior scribe of the Gilded Quire, a error traced to the Marginalia on Polian Negation mis-filing of 904.
