The Schismatic Annotations

MS 8316.82 · Documents and ordinances

Definition and scope

The Schismatic Annotations is the collective designation for a body of marginalia attributed to the secession of 4o7 from the Catalogue of Silent Annotations, comprising some 1,900 entries that were struck from the official register between the winter of 4o7 and the spring of 4o9 and subsequently recovered, re-copied, and disputed. The Schismatic Annotations are distinguished from ordinary struck entries by their mode of composition: each was written in the margin of a Substantive Annotation rather than on its own leaf, and each asserts a reading of the parent entry that the parent entry does not support. They are therefore annotations about annotations, a condition which the Sub-Committee for Transient Biological Annotations has twice ruled to be a category violation and once ruled to be merely unusual.

The Annotations are held in a buckram folio of 214 leaves, catalogued under an obsolete shelf-mark that no longer corresponds to any extant shelf. The folio is consulted by appointment, and consultors are asked not to bring ink into the reading room.

Origin

The Annotations date to the schism that produced the Vowed Librarians of Silence, whose doctrinal antecedents are traced in the Silence Edict to certain readings of Clause 4. The seceding party held that an annotation lacking inherent audibility — the class defined by the Official Latent Atlas — could not be inherited by an entry later in the sequence, and that the practice of allowing silent annotations to travel with their parents was a corruption of the original intent of the Catalogue of Silent Annotations. Their counter-annotations were written directly onto the leaves of the parent entries, in a hand identified by Palametric Scribe IX as that of a single individual working across three winters.

The strain of literal reading that animated the secession is generally placed within the intellectual lineage of the School of Literal Adherence, whose pre-schismatic debates are treated as the movement's ancestry. Not all members of the School accepted this: a minority faction argued, in a memorandum now held among the disputed papers of Annotations of Dispute, that the Schismatic Annotations were not literalist at all but merely contentious, and that the difference matters.

Recovery and re-cataloguing

The folio was discovered in the winter of 451 by a sub-committee conducting a routine inventory of the Vault of Liquid Annotations, in a stack that had been mis-shelved following the flood of 402. The discovery prompted a jurisdictional dispute between the Provisional Bureau of Annotations and the standing sub-committee that was not resolved until the matter was referred upward. The eventual ruling, issued under the Third Concordance and amended within a fortnight, held that recovered struck entries belong to the office that struck them unless the striking was itself disputed — in which case they belong to the office that would have struck them.

Re-cataloguing proceeded slowly, hampered by the fact that the parent entries had in many cases been re-annotated in the intervening centuries, so that the Schismatic margin now sat beneath two or three later hands and, in eleven cases, beneath a later hand that contradicted it in the same ink.

Interpretive dispute

Scholarly opinion divides on whether the Schismatic Annotations are best understood as a coherent doctrinal corpus or as a single prolonged grievance. The former position, associated with the commentators of the Doctrine of Creeping Authority, holds that the Annotations constitute the only surviving attempt to define the outer limit of annotative jurisdiction from within annotation practice itself. The latter position, advanced with some acrimony by Clerk-in-Residence Halvern Osk, argues that the Annotations are chiefly a record of one party's objections to a procedural decision, subsequently dignified by recension.

The two readings are not easily reconciled with the Concordances, which contradict each other on the point: one annex treats the Schismatic Annotations as a subdivision of Provisional Annotations, while another treats them as a species of Advisory Pamphlet that lost its issuing bureau. Litigation on the classification continued intermittently through the Crisis of Recursive Annotations, during which three separate offices claimed curatorial authority over the folio simultaneously.

Condition and access

The folio shows water damage consistent with the 402 flood, moderate cockling throughout, and one leaf repaired with tape that predates the Tower's record of adhesive materials. Consultation is permitted between the third and ninth hours of the working day; the folio may not be removed from the reading room, and readers are reminded that annotation of an annotated text in this instance requires prior written leave from whichever office currently claims the striking power.

Cross-references of note exist with the Quarterly Registry Reconciliation Schedule, under which the folio is counted but not reconciled, and with the Correspondent Identity register, in which the hand of the original secession remains unattributed.
