Librarian Psi

MS 2379.47 · Persons

Librarian Psi is the designation borne by the officer of the Librarians who holds custody of the Ψ series: the survey record, the quarantine ledger, and the sealed testimony concerning Stairwell Ψ. The designation is not a name and has been held by at least four individuals, none of whom is recorded in the ordinary personnel rolls; the office is entered only by cipher, and the cipher is renewed on the death or unreading of its holder. Librarian Psi is best known to the archive for the testimony delivered before the Body of Inquiry, which remains the sole certified account of the Stairwell's interior geometry and the basis on which Ordinance 4 was ratified.

By convention the office is addressed simply as "Psi," without honorific, a courtesy extended to no other Librarian. The usage is defended in Clarification 44-Z, Annex 4 on the grounds that the designation and the Stairwell it serves are indistinguishable in the registry; to distinguish them would require a distinction the registry does not supply.

Origin of the office

The Ψ series was established in the winter following the quarantine of the Stairwell, when it became apparent that no single office could hold the survey materials without also holding the testimony explaining them. The Librarian-Proctor objected that this arrangement placed a witness and the evidence of a witness in the same hand, and the objection was carried to the Sixth Librarian, who ruled in a one-line rescript that "the hand that holds the ledger must be the hand that swears to it, or neither is worth parchment." The ruling has never been revisited, though it is disputed every thirty years by the Librarian of the Third Order on procedural grounds.

The first holder of the designation left an inventory of the office's contents, dated to the second year of the quarantine, which remains in force with two amendments:

  • The Stairwell survey, bound in lead boards, in seven incompletable parts;
  • The quarantine ledger, continuous since the closure;
  • The sealed testimony, unopened except at sitting of the Body of Inquiry;
  • One shuttered window, north face, for the reading of damp documents;
  • The key to the window. It does not open anything else.

The testimony before the Body of Inquiry

The present holder of the designation is known principally for the sitting at which the Body of Inquiry heard testimony concerning Stairwell Ψ and, in the course of the same sitting, acquired the Right of Unreading. The exchange most often quoted concerns the Stairwell's reported alterations of its own landings, which Librarian Psi declined to classify as fault. Asked whether the Stairwell was reliable, Psi testified that it was "set aside for the moment when all other paths prove insufficient," and that reliability was not a property the Stairwell had ever claimed. The Body accepted the answer and did not put the question again.

"The Stairwell does not descend and does not ascend. It is the case in which paths are kept until they are needed. A reader who requires a path to be one thing and not another should not enter it."

— Librarian Psi, testimony before the Body of Inquiry, third sitting

Two of the Body's assessors recorded separate notes objecting that the testimony described Status Psi rather than an object; both notes are bound into the record, and neither was read aloud. The testimony is cited at length in Clarification 44-Z, Annex 4 and again, unfavourably, in the Librarian-Taxonomist's marginalia to the seventh part of the survey.

Dispute concerning the East Helical Staircase

Librarian Psi's testimony regarding the East Helical Staircase has been the occasion of a long-running scholarly quarrel. In the same sitting, Psi stated that the East Helical was "set aside for the moment when all other paths prove insufficient" — a description already applied to the Stairwell in the sentence immediately preceding it. The Senior Librarian for Particulate Taxonomies has argued, in a recension running to ninety pages, that the duplication is a scribal fault and that one of the two phrases must be struck; the deletion would, on her reckoning, resolve the ambiguity of the Crisis of the Ambivalent Stairwell and the origin of the "West Lateral" designation.

The office of Librarian Psi declines to correct the record. In a note appended to the Supplement, the office observes that the two structures are alike in this respect and that it sees no reason to invent a difference for the convenience of the Taxonomies. The Librarian of the Fourth Order has endorsed this position, less from conviction than from a standing reluctance to amend a sitting of the Body of Inquiry.

Status Psi and operative authority

Because the office's holder attests to the internal consistency of the Ψ series, Librarian Psi is frequently called upon to certify that a given document or spatial designation achieves Status Psi, without which no operative authority may be derived from Clause Omega-1. The certification is made by seal and countersign in the presence of two witnesses, and is refused perhaps one time in nine, most often on the ground that the applicant has described the thing rather than the thing's consistency.

A minor scandal attached to the office in the year of the third recension, when it was discovered that a certification had been countersigned by a Junior Librarian who had since been reassigned to the Lost Annexes of the Third and could not be produced to confirm the seal. The certification was not withdrawn — the office maintaining that a countersignature, once dry, is a fact — but the incident gave rise to the standing instruction that no Junior Librarian is to witness a Status Psi certification, or to be present in the room where one is made.

Access and current arrangements

The office of Librarian Psi occupies a single room off the north face of the Ψ landing, approached by a corridor some four paces long and entered without knocking. Visiting Librarians are asked not to count the steps of the Stairwell aloud while the office is in session, and to leave any polyhedron of crystalline manufacture with the Surveyor Unit at the corridor's mouth; the Unit has been unattended since the Crystalline Resonance and receives such deposits in a tray.

The present holder of the designation has not been photographed, and the archive records no description of them beyond the seal. This is not secrecy but procedure: the designation passes with the cipher, and a likeness would outlive its usefulness. Enquiries concerning the office should be addressed to the Body of Inquiry, which holds the Right of Unreading and, in matters concerning the Ψ series, the last word.
