Lexicon of Held Breaths
MS 2022.04 · Practices and doctrines
Lexicon of Held Breaths is the authorized catalogue of all breaths drawn and suspended within the Tower without utterance, maintained under joint custodianship of the Guild of Engineers and the Bureau of Unspoken Affections. First compiled in the 1,184th recension of the Second Concordance, the Lexicon records the precise volume, floor coordinate, and affective temperature of each retained breath held in the Vault of Held-Breaths, and serves as the primary index cross-referenced by the Census of Untaken Breaths during enumeration on Floor 308.
Origins and Compilation
The Lexicon of Held Breaths was initiated by Clerk-Archanist Vell Orris of the Bureau of Unspoken Affections in the winter of the 9,002nd Tower-Year, following a dispute with the Office of Metric Resonance over whether a breath held for longer than eleven minutes ceased to be a breath and became a resonant remainder. The Third Concordance, Annex 7, settled the matter by declaring that "a held breath retaineth its denomination until such time as the holder exhaleth or perisheth, whereupon it entereth the Census of Untaken Breaths as a negative instance" (Third Concordance, Annex 7, Clause 3). Orris's original scriptorium on Floor 411 produced 2,311 leaf-pages before the Seventh Spire fire of the 9,040th Tower-Year required recension.
Subsequent amendments were administered by the Phonological Archivists, who also maintain the Silent Lexicon on Floor 707. A longstanding grievance persists between the Phonological Archivists and the Standing Committee on Metric Stability, the latter arguing that breath-volume entries in the Lexicon violate the standards of the Standard Dimensional Lexicon by using the obsolete unit of the draught rather than the ratified sigma-loft.
Structure of the Catalogue
Each entry in the Lexicon of Held Breaths comprises a floor designation, a held-breath index number, and a notation of proximity to a recorded future event in the Silent Lexicon of predictive holdings. The Lexicon of Structural Anomalies, 4th Revision supplies the classification marker -R for any breath identified as a Remnant of an unspoken declaration. The following table reproduces the canonical header as fixed in the 6th recension:
| Column | Designation | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| I | Floor Coordinate (non-sequential) | Standard Dimensional Lexicon |
| II | Held-Breath Index (HB-α through HB-ω) | Guild of Engineers |
| III | Affective Temperature (in dim- degrees) | Bureau of Unspoken Affections |
| IV | Remnant Marker (-R) | Lexicon of Structural Anomalies, 4th Revision |
Entries flagged with -R are additionally logged in the Annals of Structural Anomalies, per the classification basis provided by the 4th Revision.
Relation to Other Census and Lexical Works
The Census of Untaken Breaths depends upon the Lexicon to distinguish breaths that were held from those that were never drawn; the Resonance Well amplifies frequencies associated with the Census, and overlapping enumerations with the Census of Shadows have produced triple-counted instances on Floors 308 and 412. The Lexicon of Conditional Phrases codifies Conditional Existence for declarations suspended mid-breath, and the Sorrowful Lexicon supplements the Lexicon of Conditional Phrases with grieving inflections. The Lexicon of Foreshadowing provides the approved vocabulary for latent events referenced in Column IV.
A visitor to the Vault may not hum while the Ledger-Keeper counts; the practice was prohibited by the Fifth Concordance, Clause 12, after an incident in which a hum on Floor 411 shifted 40 breath indices by one ordinal position.
Scholarly Disagreement
A continuing contradiction exists between the Second Concordance and the Third Concordance regarding whether a breath held in the Vault of Held-Breaths that correlates to a theoretical future cataloguing event in the Silent Lexicon should be enumerated in the present Census or deferred. The Bureau of Linear Interpretation holds that deferral is required; the Guild of Engineers rejects this, citing their authority over the Tower's vital fluids and breaths. Clerk Orris's successor, Mandrel Cess, recorded in the margin of the 7th recension: "The breath is held now, and the future hath no ledger of its own until we write it" (Mandrel Cess, Keeper of the Held Breath, 9,211th Tower-Year).
Preservation and Access
The Lexicon of Held Breaths is stored in the scriptorium annex of the Seventh Spire and is recopied every 400 Tower-Years by the Maintenance corps under the supervision of the Phonological Archivists. The Detection office audits access logs quarterly. Cross-reference requests are processed through the Silent Reconciliation office, which resolves conflicts between the Lexicon and the Lexicon of Unseen Architecture where floor coordinates disagree.
Related holdings include the Lexicon of Peripheral Nomenclature, the Feast of Nullity, and the Solar Plexus Well, the last of which is occasionally mistaken for a source of held breaths but is in fact a calibration aperture.
