Type A (Suspended Morphogenesis)
MS 4355.13 · Practices and doctrines
Definition and scope
Type A (Suspended Morphogenesis) is a classification of cataloguing event in which a subject's developmental trajectory is arrested at an indeterminate intermediate stage and thereafter maintained indefinitely in that condition by the archive's own filing pressure. It is distinguished from Type B Pause by the absence of any preceding motion: a Type B subject was doing something and has stopped, whereas a Type A subject has never arrived at the state it is being prevented from reaching. The distinction was formalised in the Forty-First Concordance and remains, per Annex 6 of the same instrument, "provisional pending an example."
Subjects so classified are held principally on Floor 4118, the Halting Gallery, where the shelving is arranged in shallow semicircles to accommodate entries that have been read partway and not resumed.
Historical notes
The category originated in a dispute between the Division of Suspended Logic and the Logic Guild over eleven entries recovered from a collapsed scriptorium on Sub-level 3-Δ. Each entry described a process that had been interrupted before its own beginning, and no clerk could file them under Type 1 without conceding that the processes had at some point commenced. The matter was heard before the Office of Suspended Proceedings in the winter of a year recorded only as 891, and adjourned on the grounds that the Balcony of Unfinished Arguments had been scheduled for repointing.
When the docket was finally settled, it was settled by the Curators of Suspension, who declined to adopt either party's terminology and instead coined "suspended morphogenesis" in a footnote. The footnote has since been promoted to a heading, a change recorded in Annex C-22 and contested every fourth year without resolution.
Eligibility and filing
Entries qualify for Type A designation where three conditions hold: the subject's development was never observed to start; the arrested stage is not itself a recognised terminal stage of any other classification; and at least one reader has begun the entry and abandoned it before the second column. The third condition is the one that generates most correspondence. A single abandoned reading is sufficient to establish a Type A holding, which means that a great many ordinary catalogue entries have, through the inattention of one visiting clerk, acquired a second classification they were not written to carry.
The Curators of Suspension administer a docket of suspended inquiry for such requests, and the docket has been open since its introduction. Submissions are read aloud annually to a witness under the provisions of Suspended Matter 1, a practice which has been criticised as lending unjustified ceremony to what is, in most cases, a shelving error.
Contested classification
The principal scholarly disagreement concerns whether Type A is a property of the subject at all. The Logic Guild holds that morphogenesis can only be suspended relative to an observer, and therefore that the classification properly belongs to the reading act rather than the entry; on this view, the same shelf could be Type A in the morning and unclassified by afternoon. The Division of Suspended Logic rejects this as making the archive's holdings depend on who happens to be walking past, and maintains instead that the suspension is intrinsic and permanent.
The two positions are recorded in adjacent concordances that contradict each other in clause 4 and agree in clause 5, an arrangement the Librarians have declined to amend. Until the matter is settled, both classifications are entered, in different hands, on the same card.
A minority reading, associated with the annotator Thalia of the Suspended Stair, proposes that Type A subjects are not suspended at all but are simply progressing so slowly that the archive's observation window closes first. This view has no institutional support and is not taught.
Related classifications
Type A is frequently confused with Type 3, which also involves a subject that never began, but where the failure to begin is itself the completed event. It is also distinct from Type Alpha Persistent Insertion, in which material continues to arrive from an unlocated source, and from Type-1, where the arrested stage adheres to an unrelated neighbouring entry. Cross-references between these categories are maintained by the Curators of Suspension and are, by standing instruction, to be checked rather than trusted.
Notable holdings
The Floor of Suspended Chimes holds a small secondary collection of Type A designations, applied to entries that describe chimes which were never struck. The Floor's inventory protocol, established by Thalia of the Suspended Stair, records these under potential resonance rather than under morphogenesis, which the Logic Guild considers a jurisdictional encroachment and the Librarians consider a filing preference.
Visitors to the Halting Gallery are reminded that the semicircular shelving is load-bearing and that entries may be read but not moved more than one bay to the left.
