Interstitial Authentication

Interstitial Authentication refers to the official procedure, governed by the Material Authentication Protocol, for verifying the ontological stability of a newly discovered or newly claimed Interstitial Space. It is the primary mechanism through which such spaces are integrated into the Tower’s administrative architecture and made eligible for formal documentation as Interstitial Sheaves. The process is overseen by the Directorate of Acquisition and Authentication and involves multiple agencies, most notably the Office of the Cartographer-Archivist.

Purpose and Scope

The Tower’s physical and logical structure is not contiguous; it is punctuated by Interstitial Spaces—volumes of uncertain geometry and provenance that exist between, within, or parallel to catalogued floors. The principle established by DoIT-184 (“Directive on Interstitial Taxonomies”) holds that an Interstitial Space cannot be considered a legitimate part of the archive until its fundamental “adhesion” to the Tower’s fabric has been authenticated. This process confirms that the space is not a transient anomaly, a procedural artifact, or a cognitive projection, but possesses a durable, if unconventional, connection to the Tower’s continuum.

Stages of Procedure

Interstitial Authentication is a multi-stage process, as detailed in Annex VII of the MAP.

1. Provisional Claim & Sigil Registration

Following an Interstitial Landing, the discovering Guide must file a Provisional Claim with the local Bureau of Authentication within 72 hours. This filing includes an initial survey and the application of a personal or expeditionary Sigil to a nominated “anchor point” within the space. The Office of the Cartographer-Archivist archives the sigil’s vocalized identifier and the coordinates of the claim.

2. Documentary Authentication

The claimant must then submit all primary documentation from the landing—logbooks, spectral analyses, material samples—for Documentary Authentication. This stage, operationalized by the MAP and enforced by the Directorate of Acquisition and Authentication, includes an Evidentiary Review & Contextual Cohesion phase. The Bureau of Authentication assesses whether the documented properties of the space contradict any ratified Concordances or established physical laws of adjacent floors.

3. Plenary Adjudication

If Documentary Authentication is successful, or if a grievance is lodged against the claim, an Interstitial Plenum is convened. The Plenum, operating under the Protocol for Interstitial Grievance Arbitration (7th Revision), hears testimony, reviews evidence, and votes on the space’s authenticity. Ratified minutes from this Plenum are a mandatory precursor to the creation of an Interstitial Sheaf.

4. Sheaf Inscription & Atlas Integration

Upon Plenary ratification, the space is assigned a provisional designation and its Sheaf is inscribed. Final integration occurs when the Sheaf is transferred to the permanent pages of the Atlas of Interstitial Logic, at which point the space is considered fully authenticated and subject to Tower governance.

Controversies and Scholarly Disagreement

The definition of “ontological stability” is a persistent source of debate. Concordance 412 insists stability is demonstrated by “the persistent, non-volitional return of lost objects to a central locus within the space,” while Concordance 1197 argues it is defined by “the invariant ratio of shadow-length to absent light sources across no fewer than three temporal cycles.” Disputes often arise in Plenums when a space satisfies one criterion but not the other.

A more fundamental schism exists between the Cartographic and Proceduralist schools. The former, led by the Office of the Cartographer-Archivist, holds that Authentication merely recognizes a pre-existing bond between the space and the Tower. The latter, whose views are often echoed in Directorate rulings, argues that the Authentication procedure creates the bond through bureaucratic ratification—a position critics deride as “administrative solipsism.”

Notable Authenticated Spaces

While most Interstitial Spaces are mundane (e.g., storage closets that were always there, stairwells that appear only on Tuesdays), a few authenticated cases are renowned:

• The Girdle of Quietude (Interstitial Sheaf 45.): Authenticated in Aperture 12 following a 19-hour Plenum. A corridor where sound propagates only in reverse chronological order.
• The Mural of Unfinished Faces (Interstitial Sheaf 102.δ): Its authentication was contentious, as its existence seemed contingent on being observed by fewer than three individuals. It was ultimately ratified under a special dispensation of Concordance 566, which deals with “recursive observational dependencies.”
• The Archive of Lost Prefaces: A space authenticated via a rarely invoked Protocol of Recursive Authentication, as its contents consisted entirely of documents attesting to its own non-existence.

Operational Jurisdiction

Day-to-day oversight of the authentication process is delegated by the Directorate of Acquisition and Authentication. The Bureau of Authentication handles evidence review, the Office of the Cartographer-Archivist manages sigil registration and coordinate archiving, and the Clerk of Interstitial Courts officiates Plenums. Disputes over jurisdictional boundaries are common and are typically resolved by reference to the contradictory annexes of the Material Authentication Protocol.
