Incident of the Proliferating Paradox
MS 3906.04 · Events and incidents
Overview
The Incident of the Proliferating Paradox was a Category-Delta self-propagating contradiction affecting the cross-index registers of the Lower Administrative Spirals between the fourth and eleventh months of the year 94 of the Third Concordance. It is distinguished from ordinary instances of Paradox Contamination Type VII-C by a single feature: the paradox did not spread through floors, holdings, or readers, but through citations of itself. Each time the incident was accurately recorded, the record generated a further instance of the incident, which in turn required recording. The Bureau's eventual count stood at 11,408 confirmed instantiations before the registers were sealed.
It is not to be confused with the Crisis of Proliferating Precedents, which occurred several epochs earlier and concerned the duplication of rulings rather than of occurrences. The distinction is maintained by the Department of Historiographical Paradox and is disputed by no one except that Department.
Origin on Floor 8,116
The incident began with the accession of a routine report by Sub-Registrar Ovell Marrant, then attached to the ninth scriptorium of Floor 8,116. Marrant had been tasked with describing a minor registry irregularity — the appearance of a single uncatalogued descriptor in the floor's subject ledger — and, following the standard form, cited his own report in its supporting annex. The citation resolved. The following morning the annex had become a separate holding, which cited the report, which now cited the holding. By the sixth day the ledger listed forty-one distinct sub-incidents, each with its own accession number, none of them distinguishable from the others in any particular except the number.
Marrant's own account, preserved in the scriptorium day-book, is characteristically restrained:
"I recorded it correctly. I recorded it correctly a second time because the first record was now itself a thing to be recorded. I have asked for a ruling on which of the two is the incident."
— Sub-Registrar Ovell Marrant, Floor 8,116 day-book, entry for 4.7.94
The Marrant Petition and the ruling of Addendum 719-G-447
Marrant's request for clarification became the subject of a formal petition, and the petition became, unavoidably, one more instantiation. The Paradox Control Bureau issued the incident report Addendum 719-G-447, which took the unusual step of designating the earliest record alone as the "primary instantiation" and declaring all subsequent records derivative, regardless of their order of accession. The Addendum's drafting clerk, Sennet Varrow, is credited with the phrase that ended the proliferation on paper, though not in practice: "A record of the record is not the thing recorded, except where the record is the thing."
The formula was adopted by the ninth scriptorium on the eleventh month and the ledgers closed shortly thereafter. Paradox Warden authority was not invoked. The Bureau has since noted, in a marginal annotation to Addendum 719-G-447, that this decision was "correct in outcome and unsound in principle," a phrase Varrow requested be struck and which was instead initialled.
Dispute between the recensions
Scholarly disagreement centres on whether the incident terminated or merely paused. The Short Recension of the Lower Administrative Spirals records 11,408 instantiations and a closure. The Long Recension, compiled two decades later from the sealed registers, records 11,409, the additional instance being the closure itself, which the Long Recension holds to be a record of the incident and therefore an instance of it. The Department of Historiographical Paradox has declined to reconcile the two, observing that reconciliation would produce a third.
A minority position, advanced by the archivist Halver Quist, argues that the incident never proliferated at all and that the registers merely recorded it thoroughly, an error of bookkeeping mistaken for a paradox by clerks who had not slept. Quist's monograph is held in three copies, each of which cites the other two.
Countermeasures and their residue
The Bureau's response drew on precedents established during the Incident of the Unauthorized Driveway and, more distantly, the Catalogue Lacuna Incident, adapting the logic of the Paradox Anchor to citation rather than to objects. An anchor was fixed to the primary instantiation on Floor 8,116; all subsequent records were required to cite the anchor and not one another. The measure held.
Residual effects persist. Marrant was reassigned to the sixth scriptorium and thereafter declined to sign his name to anything that mentioned him. The cross-index registers of the Lower Administrative Spirals carry, to this day, a standing instruction in red ink: "Do not cite this page." The instruction has itself been cited on four occasions, three of which were ruled not to count. Floors 8,114 through 8,118 continue to be inspected annually for accretion of the kind later addressed by the Paradox Mitigation schedules and, in the lower spirals, by the Creeping Phosphor-Moss clearances, which are unrelated but conveniently timed.
