Furnace of Quiet Oblivion

MS 3523.53 · Objects and instruments

The Furnace of Quiet Oblivion is a sealed combustion chamber located on Spiral 7, some forty metres below the Dream Registry reading galleries and directly abutting the western face of the Aetheric Furnace. It is the Tower's only registered device for the destruction of catalogue entries whose subjects have ceased to be cataloguable, and it operates under a standing charter granted jointly to the Quiet Council and the Quiet Bureau Custodians. The Furnace has never been opened since its commissioning in Year 289. It has been inspected eleven times.

Construction and position

The Furnace occupies Vault 7-C, a chamber originally cut for the storage of overflow ledgers from the Dream Registry. Its walls are of tufa block faced with the standard quieting mortar specified in Concordance of Quiet Rooms, Annex 2, and its single flue ascends through the floor of the Aetheric Furnace rather than to any outer wall — a decision of the Quiet-Masons that has been queried in writing at least six times and defended in writing at least seven.

Fuel is delivered by hand, in sealed tins, from the Quiet Forge on Floor 888. A tin holds nine hundred grams. The Furnace consumes, on average, a tin and a half per annum.

The destruction protocol

An entry submitted to the Furnace passes through three hands before it is committed: a Registrar of the Dream Registry attests that the subject is no longer cataloguable; a Warden of the Quiet Guard attests that the attestation was made in the correct room; and a Clerk of the Furnace attests that the room was quiet. The third attestation is the contentious one.

"No entry shall be committed to the Furnace save in a chamber of attested silence, and the silence shall be attested by a clerk who has heard nothing for the space of one hour."

— Concordance of Quiet Rooms, Annex 7, clause 3

Clause 4 of the same annex, appended in the same year, instructs that the Clerk of the Furnace shall ring a small brass bell at the commencement of the hour to establish the baseline. Two clerks have resigned over the contradiction. Neither resignation was accepted, both clerks remaining on the roster until Year 341.

The grievance of Clerk Anselm Vey

Anselm Vey, Clerk of the Furnace from Year 332 to Year 344, petitioned the Quiet Council on the matter in the winter of Year 338, requesting either the bell or the attestation be withdrawn. His petition ran to sixty-two pages, of which fifty-eight concerned the bell. The Council's ruling, Ruling 338/14, held that the bell was "not a sound but a condition of the room," and that clerks were therefore not disqualified by having rung it. Vey continued to ring it. He is recorded as having rung it with what a colleague described in a marginal note as "undue force."

Relationship to the Oblivion Sump

The Furnace is frequently confused with the Oblivion Sump of Floor 5017, and the confusion is not without foundation: both remove material from the catalogue, and both are named in the same recension of the Fifth Spiral Watercourse schedules. The distinction is one of medium. The Sump receives what is liquid and lets it fall; the Furnace receives what is written and does not permit it to rise. During the Oblivion Sump Incident of Year 312, the Quiet Bureau Custodians briefly considered diverting retroactive entries from the Sump to the Furnace, and abandoned the proposal when it was established that the Furnace's flue would have carried them directly into the intake of the Aetheric Furnace and returned them to circulation. The proposal's file is retained in Vault 7-C and may not be removed.

Disputed questions

Two matters remain unsettled. The first is whether the Furnace destroys or merely relocates. The Third Concordance treats destruction as accomplished at the moment of combustion; the Ninth Concordance, Annex 1, describes the Furnace as "a door and not a fire," and holds that entries proceed from it to some further place not yet surveyed. The Quiet Council has declined to adjudicate, noting in Ruling 338/14 that the question "lies beyond the chamber."

The second is the matter of the Ambient Absences. A census conducted by the Custodians in Year 347 found that the number of absences registered on Spiral 7 exceeded the number of entries destroyed by a margin of forty-one. The Custodians reported the discrepancy without comment. The Quiet Council has not opened a file on it, and the Warden of the period, Warden Sabra Ilm, is recorded as having said only that the Furnace "keeps its own accounts."

Access and maintenance

The Furnace is not open to inspection by parties with business before it. Maintenance is performed annually by two Quiet-Masons accompanied by one Custodian, who together enter Vault 7-C, verify the seal, and withdraw. No maintenance party has reported the interior of the chamber, and the annual returns record only that the seal held. The return for Year 361 adds, in a different hand, that the party should bring their own lamp, as the vault's bracket has been empty since Year 344.
