Floor Delta 117

MS 3905.41 · Places and structures

Floor Delta 117 is a mid-recession habitat floor of the Tower, recorded in the Delta Sequence as lying between Stack Delta-5 and Spiral 74, Aperture Delta though no continuous traversal has confirmed the adjacency. It is administered under the nominal oversight of the Delta Council and is principally known for the cultivation of Silent Moss under conditions specified by the Twelfth Concordance. The floor has no single name in common use; cartographers of the Division of Delta Assessment refer to it as the "Verge of the Ashlar," while the Office of Coincident Affairs styles it merely "Delta 117, unsettled."

Topography and Access

Floor Delta 117 is reached from Spiral 19-Delta, the primary access stairwell to Floor 22, by a subsidiary descent of 95 steps bearing the local mark Spiral 19 Aperture Delta Floor 4112, a designation whose origin is ascribed to a clerical reversal in G.Y. 612. The Delta Annex records that 112-A was discovered on the 112th floor of the Delta Annex in G.Y. 734, and a marginal note in that recension asserts a correspondence with Delta 117 that the Delta Council has neither confirmed nor denied. The floor comprises three chambers, of which the largest, Chamber Theta, is given over to the Aperture Delta sub-culture of moss. Visitors are advised that Chamber Theta is lit only by reflected lamp; open flame is prohibited by Clause 33, Annex Delta as it "disturbs the settled hush."

Administrative History

The earliest certain reference to Floor Delta 117 appears in a fragment of the The Delta Precedent, where it is listed among floors "reserved for the keeping of what is not yet". In G.Y. 688 the Delta Council issued Provisional Ruling 1,204/6 concerning the Delta-7 controversy, and a schedule attached to that ruling reassigned Delta 117 from the jurisdiction of Wing Delta-12 to the Division of Delta Assessment. The Scriptorium of Floor 119-Delta produced the earliest recension of Protocol Alpha, and a corollary held at Floor 3,881-Delta argues that Delta 117 was the first floor to which Protocol Alpha was applied in spirit though not in letter.

"No census of Delta 117 shall be taken, for a count implies a thing counted, and the floor holds none."

— Thirteenth Concordance Annex Delta Delta, Clause 9

The Dispute of the Missing Ledger

The Dispute of the Missing Ledger

In the winter of G.Y. 809, a clerk of the Office of Coincident Affairs named Hestrom of the Lower Stair reported that the floor's incoming inventory — twelve ashlar blocks, one cessation-bell, and a volume of The Case of the Echoing Sentinels — had not arrived. The Delta Council opened an inquiry, but the Twelfth Concordance holds that "a floor which is not may not lose what it was not given," while the Third Concordance asserts the opposite in Annex 4. Hestrom's grievance was eventually filed with Spiral 7-Delta, which houses the drafting chambers for legislative amendments on Floor 712, and there it remains, uncertified.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether Floor Delta 117 exists within the meaning of the The Delta Sequence is contested. The Division of Delta Assessment maintains that its three chambers are verifiable by the standard descent from Spiral 117, Aperture Delta, located near Aperture 172 on Floor 9,012. The Hepatic Delta curators, by contrast, hold that Delta 117 is a curated silence rather than a place, and that any ascent to it is a sanctioned rumour. The Protocol 308-Delta attempts a reconciliation by declaring the floor "simultaneously extant and withheld," a phrasing the Delta-Sigma Capillary Cluster has adopted as a seal-device.

Associated Holdings and Notes

The Delta Alcoves are occasionally mistaken for chambers of Delta 117 by visiting scholars, a confusion the Stairwell Delta keepers correct by affixing a red slip to the permit. Access Point 22-Delta lies distant, on Floor 811, and bears no relation despite a shared numeric echo. Melody Alpha Delta the Lingering Seventh is performed without instruments in Chamber Theta on the first dusk of each recension year.

A visiting rule of long standing requires that any person leaving Floor Delta 117 must first surrender their reflection at Access Point 22-Delta, Point 1, where it is held until the next recension. The Delta Precedent offers no reason for this, and the Division of Delta Assessment has never amended it.
