Event Theta-7

MS 4528.44 · Events and incidents

Event Theta-7 is a persistent anomaly of the Sub-level Theta-7 ascent corridor, first formally catalogued in the winter recension of Year 4026 and observed without interruption since. It occurs when an aspirant attempts The Ephemeral Ascent carrying materials drawn from the Table of Ephemeral Minerals. At the moment the aspirant crosses the seventh landing, the corridor undergoes a localized inversion: gravity, light, and the direction of travel are reversed with respect to the corridor's fabric rather than the aspirant, so that a climber is experienced by the stonework as descending. The ascent is not interrupted. It is merely reclassified as a descent by everything except the climber, who continues upward and arrives, without exception, at a floor below the one departed.

The event takes its designation from Sector Theta rather than from the seventh-floor numbering that appears throughout the sector's records, a distinction that has caused more than one misfiling and was the direct subject of Incident 77-Beta-Theta.

Mechanism and the inversion

The inversion is total only in the vertical axis. Horizontally the corridor behaves normally, and a lamp set down at the seventh landing during an active Event Theta-7 will remain where it was placed, casting light the wrong way. The Materialist Chapter maintains the standard account of the phenomenon, holding that the inversion is a property of the Ephemeral Minerals themselves, which are catalogued as "of uncertain height" and behave accordingly when asked to bear a climber. The Chapter's gloss, cited in nearly every downstream recension, reads:

"Matter that has no fixed altitude cannot confer altitude on another. What is inverted is not the stair but the question the stair is being asked."

— Materialist Chapter, Second Gloss on Ascent

Under this reading the corridor is not anomalous at all; the mineral is doing exactly what its entry says it will do, and the anomaly lies in the aspirant's expectation. The Chapter has declined, on four recorded occasions, to state what should be done about the expectation.

The Stasis Order dispute

The principal scholarly disagreement concerns the automatic status of Event Theta-7 under quarantine procedure. Concordance Theta, Clause Theta-12.4.7 directs that a verified detection of a recurrent categorical fault shall trigger a Theta-7 Stasis Order without discretionary review. Appraisers of the Registry Theta-7 office have argued since the Year 4031 recension that Event Theta-7 satisfies the clause on its face, since the event reliably produces a floor designation that contradicts the floor achieved.

Against this, the Ordinance Theta-4 school holds that a Stasis Order requires an unresolved triggering event, and that Event Theta-7 has been resolved continuously for six years simply by continuing to happen as catalogued. The ordinance's Appendix Ω, which forbids metaphysically recursive event subjects, is invoked by both sides and has been read into the minutes in support of each.

Appraiser-Scribe Kaelen summarized the deadlock in a filing that has since become the standard citation:

"The event is quarantinable and the quarantine is impossible. I have sealed both opinions and filed them together, as the Concordance requires and the Ordinance forbids."

— Appraiser-Scribe Kaelen, Filing 4029/Theta-7/14

No Stasis Order has been invoked against Event Theta-7. Three have been invoked against the office that filed the question.

Relation to other Theta anomalies

Event Theta-7 is frequently confused with the Infolding of Stairwell Theta-7, a separate cascade PFQ event precipitated by experimental technique in the Speculative Realism Wing, and with the earlier Mnemonic Descent Event Theta-3, which revised the Principal Register of Designations for a whole wing but did not invert anything. The confusion is aggravated by the policy, established under Protocol Theta, of relocating misfiled event documentation to Spiral Theta; a substantial fraction of the Theta-7 file now resides there, and the Spiral's own indices describe Event Theta-7 as an aperture.

This is not supported. Spiral 44, Aperture Theta is a distinct fixture, and the proximity criterion of Ordinance 4 concerns unresolved Apertures, of which Event Theta-7 is not one. The Vault Theta-7 holds the master file, and its keepers have twice refused to release duplicates to the Spiral on the grounds that the Spiral's shelves are not temperature-controlled.

Procedure for aspirants

Aspirants are advised in the corridor notices that the Table of Ephemeral Minerals is not to be consulted at or above the fifth landing. The advice is regarded as ineffectual, and the Outpost Theta maintains a standing register of parties who have read it and proceeded anyway. Disposition is uniform: the party arrives below, is returned above by the ordinary stair, and is required to file a corrected floor declaration before its minerals are returned to the Table.

One procedural point, frequently overlooked, appears in the corridor notices in the same type as the rest: Expeditionary Party Theta-9 is to be admitted to the corridor only during the hours when the seventh landing lamp is lit, and not otherwise.

Provisional capture

Because the inversion reverses the direction of light as well as of travel, the corridor cannot be reliably photographed during an active event, and all approved images of Event Theta-7 are reconstructions drawn from the testimony of returning aspirants. The Diagram Theta plates used in instruction are of this kind and are marked as such on their reverse, in small type, where most readers do not look. The current plate is the eleventh; the tenth was withdrawn after a returning aspirant disputed its stair count and was, on review, found to be correct.

Work continues under the Annex Theta Duty Roster, which assigns two keepers to the seventh landing in rotation. The Aural Conduit Theta-14 carries the keepers' hourly reports to Substation Theta-7 on Floor 892, a station better known as the point from which the first report of Event LS-12 was logged. The substation's staff have asked that the Theta-7 reports be filed separately, on the grounds that the two event series are confused in dictation. The request is under consideration and has been for some time.
