Deep Archive Designation

MS 3908.54 · Practices and doctrines

The Deep Archive Designation is a formal procedural status applied to holdings and artifacts within The Tower whose primary subject is determined to be the process and consequence of their own archiving. It is a classification of ontology, not content, governed by Third Concordance protocols and administered by the Physickers of the Deep Font under the custodianship of the Deep Stacks.

Origins and Rationale

The designation was formally instantiated in Year of the Archive 1142, during the period of institutional reassessment that followed the Cartographers’ Auxiliary Deep-Descent Expeditions. The influx of self-referential and recursively catalogical materials from the lower floors necessitated a category distinct from thematic or disciplinary archives. As articulated in the 44th revision of the Manual of Percolate & Palliative, a Deep Archive subject is one for which "the fact of its inscription within the registry is the paramount quality to be preserved; its material form is secondary to, and often a byproduct of, its archival event."

Criteria and Designation Process

Per the Concordance, Annex VII, Clause 11, three conditions, of which two must be met, trigger a Deep Archive review:

  1. The artifact demonstrates autonomous modification or annotation in response to its cataloguing.
  2. The artifact's physical stability is dependent on its precise archival coordinates within the Tower.
  3. The artifact's described content is materially indistinguishable from, or entirely constituted by, the metadata of its own entry.

Upon satisfying these criteria, a holding is subject to Ordinance 88124, which mandates registration in the Deep Catalog within 72 hours. The review is conducted jointly by a Librarian of the originating floor and a Physicker. A well-documented case is the classification of Spleen (Archive), where the organ's histological structure reconfigured itself to mirror the shelving schema of Floor 8,434, meeting both the second and third criteria.

Custody and Containment

Deep Archive materials are physically housed within the environmentally controlled sectors of the Deep Archive, a specialized annex adjacent to the Deep Stacks. The Physickers of the Deep Font hold permanent custody, responsible for maintaining the "archival field" — a suite of conditions including specific resonant humidity, calibrated silence, and in the case of materials like the Sigma-Glass Precursor, counter-hermetic sealing to prevent information percolation into neighboring collections such as the Heretical Archive. Disputes over custody, particularly concerning materials recovered from expeditions to the Archive Spire or the Echo Archive, are frequent and typically resolved by citation of contradictory Concordances.

Scholarly Disputes and Ambiguities

The primary ontological debate concerns whether Deep Archive designation creates or merely recognizes its subject's nature. The Formalist School, citing the Manual of Percolate & Palliative, argues that the act of designation is itself the final, constitutive archival event that the artifact presciently describes. The Intrinsic School, drawing from expedition logs of the Archive of Provisional Origins, contends that such materials possess a pre-existing "archival valence" that the Tower's system merely accommodates.

A further practical ambiguity, noted in the marginalia of the Deep Catalog, involves holdings that transition into Deep Archive status after initial cataloguing. The case of the Sorrow-Stained Marble from the Anterior is instructive: its weeping intensified only after its provenance was fully documented, suggesting its subject was not the marble itself, but the record of its discovery. This retroactive quality challenges the 72-hour registration window of Ordinance 88124, a contradiction often exploited in procedural appeals.

Related Classifications

Deep Archive is often conflated with, but is procedurally distinct from, the "Echo" classification used in the Echo Archive, which deals with artifacts that are shadows of other, non-existent originals. It is also separate from the "Precursor" status, as seen in the Line Sigma holdings, which are defined by their chronological priority to known events. The Deep Archive designation is unique in its focus on the recursive present of the archival act itself.
