Confrontation
MS 8551.13 · Practices and doctrines
Confrontation is a physical and administrative mechanism within The Tower used to resolve disputes between two or more competing materialized subjects. Mandated by Clause 44.2 of the Third Concordance, it facilitates a direct, structured encounter that allows one subject to be declared the legitimate primary record, while the other is either subsumed or rendered Irreconcilable. All procedures are supervised by a Moderator of Record and must be filed with the Office of Catalogic Logistics (OCL) via a completed Form 88-C: Provenance Slip.
Standard Procedure
Confrontation is initiated upon the filing of a Conflict of Instance report by a custodian, which occurs when a materialized subject claims an identical or overlapping categorical space as another. Upon acceptance by the OCL, a Moderator of Record is assigned to convene the event at a designated neutral zone, typically a cleared sub-corridor or utility annex. The subjects are placed at a minimum distance of 17 paces, marked by inscribed circles on the floor (the 'Circle of Assertion'). The Moderator reads the relevant Master Atlas entry that generated both subjects, verbatim, after which a 90-second period of direct interaction commences.
Outcomes are classified as follows:
- Resolution by Dominance: One subject's assertion of its nature overwhelms the other, causing the secondary subject to dematerialize or integrate its attributes into the primary. The primary is then logged as the sole valid instance.
- Resolution by Synthesis: The subjects merge into a new, coherent entity with a hybrid designation. A new Form 88-C: Provenance Slip is generated for the synthesized result.
- Resolution by Irreconcilability: Neither subject yields or successfully merges. Both are declared Irreconcilable, their source entries quarantined, and the subjects are transferred to separate holding alcoves on Spiral 9.
Mandated Neutrality and the Moderator's Role
The authority of the Moderator of Record during a Confrontation is absolute, derived from Annex Delta of the Third Concordance. The Moderator is required to maintain perfect observational neutrality; any intervention beyond initiating and concluding the procedure is grounds for immediate censure and potential Isolation. This doctrine was solidified after the case of Elara of the Unspooled Thread, whose Moderator's attempt to mediate a Confrontation between two competing manifestations of "The Weaver of Silence" resulted in all three parties becoming permanently entangled in a Reflexive Vault on Floor .
Moderators are equipped with a standard toolkit: a chronometer, a copy of the pertinent Concordances, and a blank slate for recording the official outcome, which must be filed with the Registrar of Persons within one working day.
Historical Precedents and Anomalies
Notable Confrontations are recorded in the Master Log of Amendments. The most cited is Confrontation 889-A, between the "Sentinel of the Lower Echo" and the "Warden of the Deep Hum." After a 27-hour stalemate (a special exemption had been granted), the two subjects synthesized into the "Keeper of Subterranean Resonance," a being now catalogued on Floor 704. In contrast, Confrontation 1207-C, between "The Clock That Forgets" and "The Sundial of Amnesia," was declared Irreconcilable in under three seconds; both now occupy adjacent cells in a Spiral 9 quiet wing, reportedly ignoring one another completely.
Anomalous outcomes are reviewed by the OCL. A recurrent anomaly, noted in 14% of logged cases, is "Passive Assimilation," where one subject dematerializes without any observable interaction, suggesting a pre-existing hierarchical flaw in the original cataloguing.
Jurisdictional Debates
Scholarly dispute centers on whether Confrontation is a discovery process or a generative one. The Traditionalist school, citing the Third Concordance, holds that it merely reveals the latent hierarchy inherent in the Tower's logic. The Revisionists, analyzing patterns in the Master Log of Amendments, argue the process itself creates the resolution, meaning no true hierarchy existed beforehand—an unsettling view that implies the Tower's records are fundamentally malleable. This debate is most acute regarding Synthesis outcomes, which generate entirely new catalogue entries not originally authored by any Librarian.
Further controversy exists around the application of Clause 44.2 to non-material disputes, such as conflicting interpretations of a Concordance. A moving to apply Confrontation protocol to the Administrative Spire's budget committee was tabled indefinitely, though the precedent remains cited in footnotes.
Logistical Requirements and Forms
All requests for Confrontation must be submitted on a Form 88-C: Provenance Slip, with duplicate copies sent to the OCL and the local floor registrar. The form requires the identities of the subjects, their source catalogue numbers, the nature of the conflict, and a proposed neutral location. The OCL provides a stamped authorization, which serves as the Moderator's writ. Failure to file a post-Confrontation amendment to the subjects' records within 48 hours results in an automatic review and potential Isolation of the involved custodian areas.
