Archive of Unstable Media
MS 8478.73 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Archive of Unstable Media is a designated repository and administrative body responsible for the classification, containment, and study of substrates whose physical or notational integrity degrades predictably upon exposure to cataloguing procedures. Established under the provisions of Concordance 127, Annex 4, its primary jurisdiction extends to all materials requiring active stabilization measures to prevent data loss, cross-contamination, or ontological collapse. The Archive operates from the lower vaults of Floor 412, though its regulatory authority is Tower-wide.
Mandate and Scope
The Archive's mandate, as defined in the Manual of Transient Custody, encompasses any media exhibiting one or more of the following properties: spontaneous notational drift, reactive decay triggered by observation, or symbiotic dependency on incompatible preservation environments. This includes, but is not limited to, spectral-phase writing media, whispering vellum, mourning moss, and paradox-encoded amber. The distinction between "unstable" and merely "impermanent" media is critical; the former implies an active, often causal relationship with its own decay, while the latter denotes simple material frailty. Governance of the latter falls under the separate Protocols for Impermanent Media, overseen by the Librarians.
Operational Protocols
All holdings within the Archive are managed according to the Doctrine of Unstable Foundations. Core procedures include:
- Isolation Sequencing: Each unstable item is housed in a unique, pre-sanctioned barrier medium, marked with the approbation glyphs defined in Clause 5.
- Verification Cycles: Content integrity is assessed via non-invasive resonant scans at intervals prescribed by the item's decay coefficient. The MAP-3 Material Consistency Test is the standard instrument for this purpose.
- Cross-Containment Procedures: A primary concern, as noted in several of the Archive's petitions, is passive threat propagation. For instance, the Archive has formally argued that fungal specimens such as Mourning Moss pose a significant risk to adjacent illuminated collections, necessitating tertiary quarantine fields.
All media entering the Tower's formal collections via the Supply of Approved Media are screened against the Archive's instability indexes, and flagged items are diverted to its custody.
Notable Holdings
- The Sighing Codices
- A series of twelve bound volumes whose ink migrates to form new sentences each time a reader's breath humidity exceeds 47%. They are stored in hermetically sealed chambers with regulated atmospheric content.
- Collection Δ-7 (The Fading)
- A suite of landscape sketches on paper made from dissolved forgetting. The vistas become less detailed and more generic with each viewing, eventually resolving into a uniform, featureless grey plain. Access requires pre-approval and a post-viewing debrief to record residual impressions.
- The Paradox-Encoded Amber Spheres
- Spheres containing events that did not happen. The stability of the amber is inversely proportional to the logical coherence of the encapsulated narrative; excessive analysis risks fissuring.
Jurisdictional Disputes
The Archive's authority has been contested, most notably during the Spectral Ink Controversy (Archive Years 1897–1905), where a guild attempted to unilaterally reclassify certain spectral-phase media as stable. The dispute centered on whether the ink's phase variance constituted a material property (falling under general guild oversight) or an instability (placing it under Archive jurisdiction). The matter was settled by Ordinance Beta, which cited the ink's need for symbiotic tincture formulation as evidence of inherent instability, thereby affirming the Archive's claim.
A more recent, unresolved scholarly disagreement concerns the classification of symbiotic tinctures. The Archive of Unstable Media maintains that any medium requiring a live, parallel substance to maintain legibility is de facto unstable. The counter-argument, advanced by the Archive of Provisional Origins, posits that symbiosis represents a higher-order stability and should be catalogued as a complex, but whole, system. This debate is currently mediated under Silence 44-Δ.7.
Relationship to Other Archives
The Archive of Unstable Media maintains a necessarily adversarial relationship with repositories dedicated to permanent or foundational records. It shares a procedural border with the Heretical Archive, though their purposes differ: the Heretical Archive catalogs ideas deemed dangerous to the Tower's epistemological structure, while the Archive of Unstable Media deals with materials dangerous to themselves. Collaborative exchanges occur with the Spleen Archive regarding organically unstable substrates, and its decay-resistance standards inform the approval process for media such as the fused silica plates catalogued as Decay-Resistant Auditory Media.
