Alloy Omega7
MS 8875.13 · Objects and instruments
Alloy Omega7 is a ternary archival alloy specified for the containment of phenomena classified as meta-substantive or persistently non-local. Its formulation and application are governed by Precedent Omega7 45, which superseded the earlier regulatory framework of Precedent Omega7 12. The alloy's primary constituent metals are archival silver, refined quodlibet, and a catalytic flux of pulverized Corinthian whisper-stone.
Formulation and Properties
Alloy Omega7 is produced under conditions of absolute auditory silence, as mandated by Clause 4 of Precedent Omega7 45. The molten mixture exhibits a characteristic absence of sheen, described in the Manual of Metallurgical Anomalies as "a grey that absorbs speculation." Upon cooling, it achieves a Mohs hardness of 7.2 and demonstrates complete non-reactivity to both corrosive and conceptual agents. Its most noted property is its capacity to dampen resonant frequencies; objects housed within or constructed from Alloy Omega7 are immune to effects described under the heading of "Sympathetic Vibration" in the Third Concordance. This makes it the material of choice for the Resonance Shelves in the Stacks of Unmoored Perspective, though those shelves employ the related Alloy Ψ-7 for reasons of cost and availability.
Standard Applications
The alloy's primary use is in the fabrication of containment fixtures for holdings deemed unstable by proximity. Standard issue items include:
- Omega7 Lockboxes: Used for the temporary storage of contested evidence submitted to the Court of Unseen Precedents. Each lockbox is inscribed with the case file number and the aperture symbol Δ.
- Calibration Plates: Thin sheets against which the official Tower measuring instruments, such as the Prototypical Metre, are periodically verified for dimensional drift.
- Baffle Grilles: Installed in ventilation ducts adjacent to archives housing recursive or self-referential texts, to prevent narrative leakage between floors.
A notable deviation from standard use is recorded in Case File 2001 44 B the Silent Bell Object, where a petition to coat the Bell in Alloy Omega7 was denied on the grounds it would "render the object's primary function moot."
Disputes Regarding Composition
A persistent scholarly disagreement concerns the precise ratio of quodlibet to archival silver. Annex B of Precedent Omega7 45 lists a range of 34–36% quodlibet by mass, a tolerance established to accommodate variances in whisper-stone potency. However, the earlier Precedent Omega7 12 mandated a fixed ratio of 35.5%, emphasizing temporal stability. Proponents of the older standard, often affiliated with the Office of Calibration, argue that the range introduced by Omega7-45 leads to "batch inconsistency" and undermines the Principle of Unseen Permanence. Practical tests, however, have failed to demonstrate any functional difference between batches produced at either end of the permitted spectrum.
Further controversy surrounds the source material for the quodlibet component. While most is refined from standard Quodlibet Alloy, a 442–Δ ruling by the Warden of Unseen Currents authorized the use of recycled Manganese Hooks from decommissioned indexing cranes in periods of shortage. Purists contend this introduces a "mechanical memory" into the alloy, potentially making it susceptible to influences from the floors of its origin.
Fabrication and Handling
Fabrication is permitted only in Forge-Sigma on Floor 44,121 ("The Anvil"). All personnel must hold a Class-Δ Metallurgy Certification. The process requires three stages of quenching: first in distilled water, second in a solution of stabilized argon (see Resonant Argonium), and finally in a vacuum chamber for a period not less than seven Tower days. Finished ingots are stamped with the Omega7 sigil (Ω7) and the spiral mark of the forging master.
Transport of raw ingots is governed by Concordance 12, Clause 88, which stipulates they must be moved on carts with Duralumin runners and may not cross the threshold of any floor whose number is a prime integer. This often necessitates elaborate rerouting through auxiliary stairwells.
Related Alloys
Alloy Omega7 is the parent compound for several specialized derivatives. Alloy Γ-9, used to line the Vault of Balances Unseen, replaces the whisper-stone flux with a neutered particulate, sacrificing some dampening properties for enhanced non-reactivity. Lucid Bronze, used in reflective surfaces intended to capture fleeting images, incorporates a trace amount of Omega7 as a stabilizing agent. The alloy is often contrasted with Whispering Iron, which amplifies resonance rather than suppressing it, and is used in entirely different archival contexts.
