Adherents of Actuality

MS 9165.66 · Practices and doctrines

The Adherents of Actuality were a reformist faction within the Guild of Dormant Scribes, active from approximately Date 10-μ to Date 45-π. They advocated for a rigorous, empirical approach to scribal dormancy, positing that a scribe's tools—specifically, pens—only achieved a state of true potential upon their first contact with writing media. Their doctrine, often summarized as "a pen is inert if it has never marked vellum," directly challenged the more abstract, intention-based philosophies prevalent in the Guild at the time.

Core Doctrine

The faction's central tenet, Latent Actuality, held that the latent potential of any scribal outcome was not merely speculative but physically manifest and quantifiable through the act of inscription. They argued that the mere intention to write, while necessary, was insufficient to actualize a pen's function. This actualization required the irreversible transfer of ink to a receptive surface, thereby creating a "scriptural event" with measurable consequences. Their focus was thus on the moment of contact between tool and medium, which they termed the Axiomatic Nullpoint of any textual endeavor.

This stood in stark contrast to the majority of the Guild, who maintained that a master scribe's trained intent could imbue a tool with potential long before physical use, a concept derided by the Adherents as "vagrant metaphysics."

Protocols and Measurements

The Adherents developed a series of meticulous protocols to substantiate their claims. The most famous was the seven-step procedure for determining the Actuality Coefficient (ACr), a proprietary metric designed to quantify the pre-determination latent in a given scribal setup. The protocol required a controlled environment, usually a subsidiary chamber off Stairwell Beta, and involved:

  1. Calibration of the pen's nib against a standardised slate.
  2. Preparation of the vellum to a specified humidity level.
  3. A silent period of intent-focus by the scribe.
  4. The single, decisive downstroke.
  5. Immediate measurement of ink absorption depth.
  6. Analysis of fiber disruption under lens.
  7. Calculation of the ACr via a complex formula involving the aforementioned measurements and the scribe's Guild seniority index.

These measurements were then logged with the Bureau of Quantitative Esoteria for archival verification.

Schism and Dissolution

The faction's rigid empiricism eventually led to its undoing. A significant internal schism arose concerning the status of unsuccessful scriptural events—specifically, a pen striking an impermeable surface or a surface prepared with non-absorbent glaze. One camp, led by Archivist Lorcan, argued that such an event still constituted an Axiomatic Nullpoint and thus generated a valid, if negative, ACr. The opposition, citing Clause 5 of the Guild's charter on "productive dormancy," held that only events resulting in legible ink transfer could be counted.

The debate paralyzed the faction's operations. Furthermore, their methodology was formally critiqued by the School of Latent Actuality in the wake of the Seventh Pronouncement on Clarified Endings, which argued that the Adherents' focus on the physical moment ignored the broader, interwoven nature of outcomes. Without a unified doctrine, the faction was subsumed back into the broader Guild of Dormant Scribes by Date 46-π. Many of their former members later joined the more synthetical Adherents of the Palimpsest.

Legacy

The Adherents of Actuality left a distinct, if minor, imprint on Tower record-keeping. Their insistence on material verification influenced the standards for certifying archival inks and vellums. The Bureau of Quantitative Esoteria still maintains several of their calibration devices in its collection of historical methodologies. However, their greatest legacy is perhaps a cautionary one, frequently cited in administrative memos: an over-application of empirical rigor to fundamentally speculative processes can render the process itself dormant.

Their foundational text, the Manual of Scriptural Event Thresholds, is kept under restricted access in the Central Scriptorium, Annex Δ, and requires a dispensation from a Senior Librarian to consult.
