Ad Hoc Committee on Acoustic Validation
MS 5370.82 · Guilds, orders and offices
Ad Hoc Committee on Acoustic Validation is a provisional deliberative body convened under the authority of the Librarians to assess the sonic integrity of catalogued holdings prior to their submission for whispering severance. Established by a marginal note in the Red Folio (Recension 4, folio 211), the Committee has never been dissolved and is therefore, by the Precept of Recursive Validation, still sitting.
Origins and Constitution
The Committee was first convened on the 14th of the Deep Winter of Cycle 3,118, following the partial desynchronization of the Sounding Gallery and the subsequent issuance of eleven unrequested low tones across Floors 4,009 through 4,022. The Office of Auditory Catalography petitioned the Integration Committee for relief, and the resulting writ authorised the formation of an ad-hoc panel "to weigh the sound of things against the sound they ought to make." Membership was drawn from the Office of Auditory Catalography, the Cabinet of Echoes, and a single clerk from the Bureau of Ingress Validation whose name, per the Red Folio, has been struck and rewritten seven times without resolution.
The Committee's founding instrument cites the Ad Hoc Inquisitorial Protocols as granting standing, though the Charter of Inquiry had by then superseded those protocols; the contradiction was noted by the Committee on Jurisdictional Overlap but never adjudicated.
Procedures of Validation
A holding presented for acoustic validation is placed in the antechamber of the Sounding Gallery and struck once with the Spengler Resonator. The Committee then records whether the resulting tone confirms, denies, or merely accompanies the object's catalogued nature. A tone that accompanies without confirming is entered into the Cabinet of Echoes as a provisional ambiguity and is not thereafter spoken of on Tuesdays.
"No object shall be severed from the archive by whisper until the Committee has certified that its silence, if imposed, would not itself resonate."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4
In practice the Committee has validated 3,402 holdings and declined 88, the latter chiefly on the grounds that the petitioning body had failed to supply a tone of the correct winter. The Calibration Oversight Committee has on three occasions disputed the coefficient sets used in these measurements, producing the jurisdictional tension recorded in the Sealing Committee Review.
Disputes and the Question of Standing
Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether the Committee was ever lawfully constituted. The Committee for Ontological Review holds that its standard validation chains were bypassed when the Office of Auditory Catalography accepted the marginal note in the Red Folio as sufficient warrant. The Committee of Permanent Review, by contrast, maintains that the Bureau of Recursive Validation implicitly ratified the body through its administration of Recursive Validation for petrified materials.
The Committee on Jurisdictional Overlap observed in a footnote to clause 17(a)(iii) of the Eleventh Concordance that the Committee "occupies a floor it has not been assigned and validates sounds it has not been given," but took no further action. Visitors to the Committee's sessions are reminded that applause is prohibited, as it constitutes an unrequested tone.
The Incident of the Wrong Aperture
On the 3rd of the Lesser Snows of Cycle 3,204, a junior scribe of the Curatorial Guild presented a bronze hinge from the petrified wing for validation at Aperture 7-beta rather than the required Aperture 7-alpha. The Committee certified the hinge as silently compliant; within nine days the hinge had produced a sustained middle tone that propagated through the Cabinet of Echoes and required intervention by the Provisional Stone-Wardens Committee. The Red Folio records that the scribe was subsequently assigned to the Committee of Necessary Splits and has not been heard from since.
Current Status
The Committee continues to sit on an unnumbered landing between Floors 4,112 and 4,113, a location confirmed by the Integration Committee but disputed by the Committee for Non-Intersecting Jurisdictions. Its most recent published finding, dated Cycle 3,441, concerns the acoustic properties of absence and was forwarded to Kaelen of the Unwritten Quarter as bearing upon the corrosive force of missing narrative. The Precept of Recursive Validation ensures that so long as no dissolution writ is filed, the Committee remains in session and its quorum is presumed present.
