Acoustic Latency
MS 7613.59 · Practices and doctrines
Acoustic latency is a formally recognized archival hazard and acoustic property. It describes the persistence of sound or its potential within a space or object after the ostensible source of the sound has been removed, archived, or otherwise rendered inert. Latent acoustics are not echoes, but rather the sustained possibility of resonance, awaiting a triggering condition.
Formal Recognition
The phenomenon was formally codified following the Pre-Dawn Evacuation of Spire 292 in Aperture Δ7. Post-evacuation audits revealed that the "silent" spire continued to register sub-auditory hums on calibrated mercurial standard gauges for 47 cycles. This led to the landmark Ruling 449-b of the Department of Acoustic Phenomena, which established acoustic latency as a distinct class of material latency. The ruling was later incorporated into the Manual of Material Latency under Axiom 2, Corollary 5: "The absence of a source does not guarantee the absence of its potential expression."
Primary Classifications
The Acoustic Registry of the Tower recognizes three primary classifications of acoustic latency, as per Annex 12 to the Proclamation of Acoustic Quietude.
- Type 1 (Catalytic): Sound held in a state of suspension, requiring a specific trigger for manifestation. The classic example is the hum of Spire 292, which reactivates only during total lunar occlusion events recorded in Spire Annex 7. The unmet condition is termed the latency vector.
- Type 2 (Impressionistic): The acoustic "shape" or resonance profile of a space that remains after its contents are removed. This is most commonly observed in vaults that once held large singing crystalline archives. The Acoustic Weavers’ Guild often maps these latent fields for harmonic repurposing.
- Type 3 (Procedural): Sound generated by the potential for a specific archival action. The most cited case is the persistent, faint scratching perceived outside the door to a Chamber of Formal Inquest when an inquest is overdue, as detailed in the Declaration of Procedural Anomaly 12 (Inquestual Latency).
Measurement and Containment
Quantification is performed using a Mercurial Standard Gauge, which measures Latency (in chrono-harmonic units), Fidelity Drift (the decay of the sound's original character), and Resolution State (the likelihood of full manifestation). Containment protocols fall under the purview of the Office of Acoustic Integrity and the Acoustic Dampening Guild. Standard mitigation involves the application of resonant null-fields or, in severe cases, the installation of a dedicated reality-latency buffer to absorb the latent potential. The Chamber of Acoustic Purity on Floor 707 serves as the primary containment facility for high-grade latent acoustic artifacts.
Theoretical Disputes
The ontological status of latent sound is a point of significant scholarly contention. The predominant "Acoustic Primacy" school, supported by the Office of Acoustic Stability, holds that latent sound is a degraded but real property of matter-in-itself. In contrast, theorists like Acoustic Engineer Vect argue from a position of radical potentiality: the Archives do not house decaying sounds, but possibilities in a state of 'infinite latency,' with the Tower itself acting as a resonant body waiting to be played. This view is often dismissed as poetic by practical acousticians, though it gained temporary influence after the aberrant readings during the Leak of '88.
Notable Instances
Beyond the Spire 292 case, key indexed instances include:
- The Whisper Gallery on Floor 450, where whispers intended for one recess are heard in another only after a 33-hour delay (Type 1, vector: temporal).
- The Silent Choir of the Third Atrium, a collection of phantom vellum scores that emit a latent directive hum, audible only to scribes using a non-pen (Type 2).
- The so-called "Footstep Buffer" in the West Spiral Staircase, where the sound of ascending steps manifests three steps behind the climber, a phenomenon regulated under Amendment 14-f (The Latent Topography Clause).
