Silent Choir
MS 4515.15 · Documents and ordinances
The Silent Choir is a Potentialist composition archived within The Silent Choir of Incomplete Symphonies on Floor 9,001. Its formal designation is Work 7.7-alpha, though it is commonly referred to by its performative title. It is distinguished as the only documented composition for which every nominal note is, in practice, a rest of variable and precisely specified duration.
Structure and Notation
The work is scored for an ensemble of forty-eight instrumentalists, though the score explicitly prohibits the production of audible sound. Instead, each musician’s part consists entirely of measured rests, annotated with detailed instructions regarding posture, breath control, and the minute adjustment of instrument positioning. The duration of these rests ranges from a single hemidemisemiquaver rest to spans exceeding 127 bars of complete silence. A specialized notation system, developed by the Candlemark Choir, employs grey ink on off-white paper to denote the "pressure" or "intent" of silence, with gradients indicating varying degrees of auditory potential.
The composition is divided into seven "Spirals," each corresponding to a different emotional resonance intended to be conveyed through the quality of the ensemble's collective stillness. Spiral IV, for instance, is annotated “con sordino dell'anima” (with the mute of the soul), requiring performers to partially disassemble their instruments without allowing any component to audibly contact the floor.
Doctrinal Significance and the Implied Quorum
The Silent Choir’s acceptance into the Tower’s permanent holdings was a direct consequence of the Incident of the Silent Choir on Floor 111. The Librarians’ Adjudicatory Panel ruled that the work constituted a legitimate cataloguing of "implied sound," thereby falling under the Doctrine of Implied Quorum. This doctrine, articulated in the ruling, holds that a sufficiently detailed framework for silence creates a conceptual "quorum" of sound, the absence of which is itself an archival object. The Seventh Concordance, Addendum 7-G, ratified six months after the Incident, formally recognized the Candlemark Choir as the custodial guild for such works, with the Silent Choir serving as their foundational exemplar.
Performance History and the Mandated Interval
By Concordance, the Silent Choir may only be "performed" once per solar decade. These performances are not public events but procedural audits, supervised by a panel of three Librarians of the Silent Record. The primary purpose is to verify the continued viability of the notated rests and to assess the ambient atmospheric conditions of the performance chamber, which are meticulously logged. The most recent performance, Audit Cycle 43, was notable for the unscheduled intrusion of a Silent Choir-Spider, which spun a web between a violist’s music stand and the floor during Spiral II. The web was harvested by attending Inquisitors and its acoustic-dampening properties were found to be within acceptable tolerance, as per Annex Ω of the Performance Protocols.
A contentious scholarly debate exists regarding the mandated ten-year interval. The Fifth Concordance suggests it is a precaution against "silence fatigue," while the later Eighth Concordance implies it is a minimum period required for the "potential sound" of one performance to fully dissipate before the next can be safely initiated. This contradiction is a standard reference in disputes concerning temporal cataloguing principles.
Material and Influence
The original score is maintained in a hermetically sealed, non-resonant ceramic case on Floor 9,001, a direct architectural legacy of the Incident. Copies, rendered in attenuated ink on whisper-thin vellum, are available for study in the Silent Divan reading room. The composition’s structure has influenced several subsequent archival practices, most notably the protocols for Silent Wing Reconciliation and the routing algorithms used by the Couriers of the Silent Stair. Furthermore, the geometric patterns of the musicians' prescribed seating arrangements during Spiral III were later abstracted to form the basis of the Diagram, a key document recovered from the same floor.
Disputed Authorship and the Echo-Claim
Official attribution lists the composer as "Anonymous, per the Mandate of Unvoiced Creation." However, a persistent minority scholarly position, advanced primarily by archivists in Spiral 9, argues that the work is a collective unconscious projection of the Ghost-Choir of the West Stairwell, retroactively transcribed. This "Echo-Claim" is generally dismissed by mainstream Tower scholarship, as it relies on a contested interpretation of the Third Concordance's clauses regarding post-temporal authorship. The claim is, however, kept in open file due to its utility in discouraging overly literal interpretations of archival provenance.
