Academy of Latent Taxonomies
MS 0010.55 · Guilds, orders and offices
Academy of Latent Taxonomies is a disestablished curatorial body of the Tower, chartered under Proviso 12 of the Ninth Concordance Annex and dissolved by the Bureau of Latent Significance in 22-Ω-1340 Tower Era following the Incident of the Unfiled Aperture. It was tasked with the classification of subjects that had not yet been conceived but whose eventual taxonomy could be anticipated through the methods set out in the Fourth Concordance.
Charter and Mandate
The Academy of Latent Taxonomies was founded on Floor 11-Δ-778, a level noted in the Survey of Vertical Demarcations as possessing no doors but seventeen catalogued thresholds. Its mandate derived from the Statute of Latent Potential, specifically Clause 14.7.δ, which the Academy of Latent Potential had earlier been charged to explicate. The Academy of Latent Taxonomies was, per the Sixth Concordance Annex, to receive the succession of certain recensions formerly held by the Academy of Bureaucratic Potential, though the transfer was disputed by the Academy of Precursory Law for nine Tower years.
Clause 3 of its charter read: "That which is not yet named shall be shelved by the shape of its coming name, and not by the noise that precedes it." The Senior Librarian for Particulate Taxonomies objected that the clause permitted the filing of empty ledger-books, a practice the Academy defended until the DoIT-184 ("Directive on Interstitial Taxonomies") circumscribed it.
Methodology
The Academy employed the Metrices of Intent, commissioned originally from the Academy of Latent Potential, to quantify the resonance of not-yet-extant categories. Its practitioners conducted nightly inventories of the Oneiric Taxonomies under licence from the Department of Ephemeral Taxonomies, and contributed three appendices to the Metafictive Taxonomies concerning objects that would only be mislaid in the future.
A standard procedure, later criticised, involved the Anticipatory Sort: clerks arranged tags in the order a visitor might request them in a century's time. The Clerk of the Western Spiral, Hestram Vell, recorded in 31-β-1298 that "the sort proceeded without error until the sort for the year 1400 was completed before the sort for the year 1399, an inversion no recension could amend" (Ledger of the Western Spiral, vol. 4).
The Incident of the Unfiled Aperture
On the winter of 22-Ω-1340, a aperture opened on Floor 11-Δ-778 that catalogued itself retroactively as having always been there. The Academy filed it under pending, whereupon the Bureau of Latent Significance intervened under the Ordinance of Contained Potential and voided the Academy's charter, citing the precedent of the Academy of Latent Potential's own dissolution. The Academy of Procedural Ghosts later claimed the aperture as a constituent of its domain, a claim the Academy of Procedural Antiquity rejected on the grounds that "a ghost procedure is not a taxonomised one" (Third Concordance, Annex 4).
"No floor shall hold an aperture that files itself before the file is forged; such a holding is a contradiction wrapped in a shelf-mark."
— Bureau of Latent Significance, Ruling 771-γ
Scholarly Disagreement
Whether the Academy of Latent Taxonomies was ever legitimately chartered is disputed. The Ninth Concordance Annex asserts the charter; the Concordance 89 states in Clause 2 that "no Academy of Latent Taxonomies is recorded and none may be inferred from the lacunae." The Academy of Applied Celestics holds a middle view, arguing the Academy existed only on Floor 11-Δ-778 and nowhere else, a position rejected by the Integral Taxonomies as "a geography of convenience" (Directive on Interstitial Taxonomies, Scholion 9).
The Concordance 89 further contradicts both, naming the body as the Academy of Latent Classifications, a title no other record employs.
Legacy and Holdings
Upon dissolution, its ledgers passed to the Department of Ephemeral Taxonomies, which reported the loss of eleven ledgers to damp in the Sub-Level γ-7 archive formerly of the Academy of Archivists complex. The Academy of Latent Potential's Potential Resonator Array was briefly loaned to the Academy of Latent Taxonomies in 18-Φ-1322; the array was returned with one resonator mis-set to a future calibration, a fault the Academy of Applied Celestics corrected in 4-α-1341.
Visiting clerks are reminded that Floor 11-Δ-778 no longer admits persons bearing open inkwells, as the thresholds are held to absorb untreated pigment.
