Whispering Genealogies
MS 6557.22 · Practices and doctrines
The Whispering Genealogies are a class of descendancy records kept in the Whispering Stacks in which each entry, read aloud in the prescribed manner, produces a faint but audible statement of the relationship it describes. The Genealogies are not, strictly speaking, a single document or register; the term denotes the whole body of lineage material held on Floor 312 the Whispering Stacks and the method of recitation proper to it. The Hall of Whispering Specifications classifies the core holdings as Category III Whispering Artifacts, noting in its schedule that a genealogy "occupies the acoustic register of the descent it records, and shall not be filed among ordinary acoustics" (Hall of Whispering Specifications, Appendix 11).
Consultation is restricted. The records are not read silently; silent reading returns an illegible tone that the Census of the Whispering Stacks has twice declined to characterize in writing.
Composition and Format
The Genealogies are housed in 340 scroll cases of matched hide, each case bearing a lineage mark in Roman numerals from I to CCCXL. A case contains between two and nine generations, set out as a linear descent; collateral branches are recorded on the reverse of the scroll and are, by the custom of the Stacks, permitted to whisper only in the presence of a seated observer. The Whispering Cataract Scrolls, though shelved nearby and sometimes confused with the Genealogies by visiting parties, are not genealogical material and are catalogued separately under Category II.
Each entry carries three components: the name of the progenitor, the terminal descendant of that line, and between them a statement of the connecting descent. When the scroll is unrolled and the entry recited, the scroll supplies the middle term. The progenitor speaks the first clause in what compilers describe as a dry register; the descendant supplies the close; the scroll murmurs the intervening generations at a volume below the progenitor but above the descendant, so that the participants in a recitation can hear the line from both ends at once.
The Reiterative Method and the Dupont Dispute
The method of reading is governed by the Reiterative Recitations Concordance, which requires that a genealogy be recited three times, and that the recitation be halted after the third in every case. The third reading is stabilising: it fixes the descent against the drifting that otherwise overtakes entries after long dormancy. But it also encourages the scroll to add generations — a tendency documented in the clerk's grievance of Second Archivist Halloway Dupont, who in the winter of the year the Seventy-Second Floor was closed for repair recited case CXVII four times in error and thereafter recorded a line that named itself as its own remote descendant. The additional reading stood for eleven months before the Whispering Stacks office struck it, and the strike is still contested.
Dupont's grievance, filed under seal and not released for general consultation, is the standard example of why the third-and-final rule is repeated in the petition materials as well as in the Recitations Concordance. The office's note on the incident is characteristically terse:
"A line that names itself as its own descendant is not an error of descent. It is a fifth reading. Cease recitation at three."

Dispute Over Classification
Scholars disagree as to whether the Genealogies belong to Category III or to the newly argued Category IV, which the Hall of Whispering Specifications has proposed for artifacts whose whisper carries propositional content. The Category IV proposal was drafted chiefly with the Genealogies in mind, and would reclassify them as records that assert rather than merely resonate. The conservative position, defended by the Census of the Whispering Stacks, holds that a genealogy asserts nothing beyond itself; that the descent it murmurs is the descent inscribed on the scroll; and that to call the whisper propositional is to grant the scroll an authority the Shelf Covenant withholds.
The First Spire Delineation Protocols are sometimes adduced on the conservative side, since their genealogies of authority begin with the First Librarians and derive their force from recitation rather than from the register of what a recitation says. The Protocols do not settle the matter, but they are cited so often that the dispute has acquired the look of a settled custom. The Whispering Gallery Procedural takes no position.
Precautions and Notable Incidents
Recitation is permitted only in the presence of two clerks, at least one of whom may not be a named party in the descent under review. This prohibition is old and occasionally ignored. In the winter incident on Floor 312, a junior clerk recited her own case aloud while alone and reported hearing four generations of herself, none of whom she could identify; the scroll was subsequently quarantined for the required ninety days, and the office observed that the quarantine period is not observed in every case.
The Genealogies were formerly catalogued in the Whispering Galleries on Floor 47, alongside the Whispering Atlas, before the Galleries were given over to cartographic material and the genealogical holdings transferred to the Stacks. The Whispering Atlas Petition records the transfer in its recitation schedule. The Genealogies' association with the Atlas persists in the claim, unproven, that the Atlas will generate a descent diagram in response to a recitation conducted on an open copy; the Whispering Gallery Precedent governs the trace elements such a diagram would include.
Access
Requests for recitation are submitted to the Census of the Whispering Stacks on the standard form and are heard in the order received. Supplies are not provided, and no clerk will lend a pen; the office's notice on the point has stood unamended since the floor was repaired. A listing of the cases most frequently requested follows the chronological order of their lineage marks, not their order of accession.
- Case I — the founding descent, recited once yearly, on no fixed date.
- Case XVII — the Dupont line, subject to the eleventh-month strike.
- Case CXVII — quarantined; the fifth reading remains on file.
- Case CCLXXXIV — collateral branches only; silent.
- Case CCCXL — last mark in sequence, open to consultation.
Officers of the Stacks note that the last case in sequence rarely tallies with the last case in time, since the numbering has been reassigned at least four times, and that this discrepancy is itself a matter for the Recitations Concordance rather than for the office.
