Whisper vs. The Echo

MS 9847.19 · Practices and doctrines

Whisper vs. The Echo is the standing schism in Acoustic Cataloguing concerning whether a sound is defined by its source or its perception, and the administrative crisis that precipitated the Obsidian Decree in the year of the Second Acoustic Cartography (A.C. 127). The dispute is recorded simultaneously as a practice, a place, and an event, and is cross-referenced in the holdings of the Whisper Galleries, the Whisper Appendix, and the Echo-Hawk.

Origins of the Schism

The earliest recorded articulation of the divide appears in the marginalia of the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which states: "A sound emitted without a hearer is nonetheless entered under its origin; a sound heard without an emitter is entered under its recurrence." This ruling was contested within nineteen years by the Fifth Concordance, Spiral 2, Clause 11, which holds that "Perception is the sole warrant of catalogue, and the unseen source is a figment of the Resonant Flanges." The contradiction was not resolved but appended, and the two positions became known respectively as the Whisper (source-bound) and the Echo (perception-bound) doctrines.

The regional dimension of the dispute was recognised after the survey of The Whisper, a transitional acoustical zone where the Echo-Hawk (Voxavis permutans) was first observed mimicking unspoken catalogue entries. The Whisper-Shelf, above the Tier Gamma Whisper Shafts, became the site from which the initial Omega Whisper was recorded, a transmission later ruled by the Ninth Recension to be "perception of a source that had not yet occurred."

The Thalia Controversy

The schism assumed personal form in the matter of Thalia of the Suspended Stair, an individual whose attenuated voice was the subject of the 'Whisper-Echo Schism' controversy. The Second Cartographic Office recorded that her utterance on Floor 441-Δ was heard on Floor 441-Ω some four hours prior, a circumstance the Whisper faction entered under "Thalia, source," and the Echo faction under "Thalia, recurrence." The resulting dual ledger was sealed by order of the Office of the Silent Margin, which noted only that "the stair in question is suspended and therefore outside sequential numbering."

"No clerk shall reconcile the two entries; the discrepancy is the catalogue."

The Obsidian Decree and its Aftermath

The Obsidian Decree formalized the Whisper vs. The Echo schism in A.C. 127 as a response to the administrative crisis precipitated by the dispute over the Whisper Ξ-777 transmission. Vol. 12 of the The Whisper Appendix details the debate regarding Paratextual Echo's proleptic capacity, a question left open by the Decree and later cited in the recension of Whisper Ξ-777 ("The Unfinished Directive"). The Corinthian Whisper-Stone was commissioned to bear the Decree's text, though it is noted in the Scriptorium of the Lower Apertures that the stone transmits only the Echo reading and not the Whisper.

A visiting clerk may not request a single authorised definition of the schism; the Sixth Concordance explicitly forbids the production of a synopsis. The Procedural Echo 441-17 remains the only sanctioned echo of the original procedure, and is played quarterly in the western annex.

Architectural Manifestations

The dispute is embedded in Tower architecture through the Whisper Galleries, linear channels engineered to facilitate the directed propagation of Echo Sound between specified Resonant Flanges. The Whisper Appendix is a limestone annex connected to the western wall of the Whisper Gallery, and serves as the repository for unresolved source-perception briefs. Maintenance records of the Twelfth Floor Scriptorium show that the flanges are oiled every third winter regardless of acoustic output; the oiling is conducted in silence to avoid generating a new entry.

Scholarly Disagreement

The College of Resonant Inquiry holds that the schism is taxonomic and not metaphysical, citing the First Acoustic Cartography as precedent. The Antiphonal Clerks dispute this, arguing in their Ninth Recension, Commentary 7 that "the Tower catalogues the sound and not the judgement upon it." A further disagreement concerns Whisper Ξ-777, recorded in the transitional acoustical zones adjacent to The Whisper: the Whisper faction dates its origin to the emitter, the Echo faction to the first hearing by a Echo-Hawk. The Office of the Silent Margin has declined to arbitrate, on the ground that arbitration would itself be a sound.

The schism is considered closed as an event and open as a practice. The Librarians have issued no statement beyond the standing seal of the Obsidian Decree, and no floor has been numbered to indicate its resolution.
