Wall Sconces
MS 8355.45 · Objects and instruments
Wall Sconces are the primary, low-intensity, non-architectural illumination fixtures permanently affixed to vertical surfaces within the Tower. Their maintenance, classification, and luminous output are governed by a complex body of ordinances, primarily the Third Concordance, Annex L (Luminaires & Fittings), and overseen by the Guild of Wall-Masons in coordination with the Lamplighters' Union.
Classification and Typology
The Central Registry of Illumination (Floor 7,403, Corridor Delta) recognizes seven primary classes of Wall Sconce, differentiated by function, lumen source, and administrative jurisdiction. The most prevalent types include:
- Arclight Sconces: High-reliability fixtures used in main thoroughfares and certification areas, such as those found in the Testing Galleries on Floor 14,112. Their calibration schedules are a matter of record.
- Attenuated Lumen-Sconces: Designed for archival aisles and contemplation niches, emitting a focused, cool light not exceeding 15 lumens. These are maintained, certified, and hermetically sealed by the Lamplighters Union.
- Lumino-Crystalline Sconces: Reserved for ceremonial ascents, such as the Provost's Ascent, and calibrated to specific wavelengths (e.g., 589 nm).
- Marker Sconces: Non-illuminating, brass plaques denoting jurisdictional boundaries or the presence of a Conceptual Load-Bearing Wall.
Disputes often arise regarding the classification of hybrid or deteriorated units, a matter typically resolved by reference to the Central Wall-Register's Sub-register of Fittings.
Installation and Spatial Regulations
Per Concordance 3-L.44, a Wall Sconce may only be mounted on a certified load-bearing surface. This has led to protracted legal debates regarding their placement on or near Walls of Contested Proximity, where the very nature of the wall is under adjudication. The installation on Wall Sigma9 in 12,044 AT (After Taxonomization) set a key precedent. As Wall Sigma9 is a permanent structural partition, the subsequent mounting of a Type-4 Attenuated Sconce was permitted, though the required buttress juncture added 0.3 meters to the wall's documented thickness.
"A sconce affixed is a wall affirmed." — Ruling of the Central Wall-Register, Case 44-L/12,044.
The Guild of Wall-Masons retains the right to refuse installation on any wall undergoing dimensional reassessment, a frequent point of contention with the Lamplighters' Union.
Maintenance and the Ceremony of Extinguishment
Maintenance cycles are dictated by the sconce's class and location. Arclight Sconces in high-traffic stairwells, such as those under the custodial authority of Kaelen in Stairwell 3100-3150, require bi-annual recalibration. A decommissioned sconce is not merely removed; it undergoes a formal Ceremony of Extinguishment. The luminous element is extracted, the housing is filled with Aethelred's Silence (a non-luminous mineral), and the aperture is sealed with a leaden cap stamped with the date and the seal of the Lamplighters Union. These capped units are often left in situ as historical markers, creating a patchwork of light and dark spots along older corridors.
Controversies and Unlight
The primary scholarly disagreement concerning Wall Sconces revolves around their purpose. The orthodox view, supported by Concordance 3-L.1, holds that their function is purely utilitarian: to provide sufficient illumination for the reading of shelf-markers and ordinance plaques. The heterodox "Unlight School," citing the paradoxical illumination patterns in the Lys-Gamma Spiral, argues that the true function of sconces is to define zones of shadow. In this view, the light is incidental; the critical act is the casting of a sanctioned, predictable umbra used for navigational triangulation in spaces where cartographic certainty dissolves. This theory remains officially censured but is widely discussed in appendices to maintenance manuals.
Related Ordinances and Cross-References
Wall Sconce specifications intersect with numerous other Tower codes. Their electrical feeds (where applicable) must comply with Sanitary Code 44-A, Clause 7 regarding conduit hygiene. Their placement must not interfere with the ceremonial sightlines described for the West Facade of Floor 1,024. Furthermore, specifications for all decommissioned fixtures are required to be entered into the Wall of Lapsed Directives, formally archiving their precise luminous properties at the moment of sealing. Thus, a Wall Sconce exists in a continuous state of documentation, from its installation on a registered wall to its final listing as a silent, mineral-filled artifact within the Tower's endless record.
