Unrooms
MS 2193.05 · Practices and doctrines
Unrooms are spaces within The Tower officially documented as absent. They are administrative voids, formally excised from the architectural record via Concordance procedure and thereafter maintained as institutional non-presences by the Office of New Supports.
Definition and Legal Status
An Unroom is defined under Clause 12 of the Fifth Concordance as “a volume, contiguous with Tower structure, whose existence has been rendered null by due process.” This nullification is distinct from demolition or sealing; the space is not made inaccessible, but rather uncatalogued. Its former designation is retired, its measurements struck from the Registry of Dimensions, and all references to it in the Central Catalogue are replaced with a standardized void-glyph (see Fig. 1). Legally, an Unroom is considered to have never been built, despite often being plainly traversable.
Process of Uncreation
The creation of an Unroom, termed “Uncreation,” is initiated by a petition from a Tower department or, in rare cases, by a ruling from the Archivist-Proctor. Grounds for Uncreation, as per Annex Δ of the Fifth Concordance, include: persistent failure to comply with lighting ordinances (see First Edict of Lamps), irreconcilable disputes over a room’s primary function, or the room becoming “a net consumer of administrative attention.” The petition is reviewed by the Office of New Supports, which paradoxically holds jurisdiction over architectural subtractions. Upon approval, a ceremony of Erasure is performed, wherein a Legate reads the room’s former designation backwards and inks over its entry in the relevant floor-plate held by the Office of the Cartographer-Archivist. The space then attains Unroom status.
Notable Examples
- The Antechamber of Unfinished Business (Formerly Corridor 77α, Spiral 9)
- Uncreated in 12-Δ-433 after a seven-decade debate regarding whether a specific bench along its northern wall was a place for reflection or for queueing. Both factions ultimately petitioned for Uncreation to resolve the stalemate. Visitors report still seeing the bench.
- Annex Δ Vestibule
- A rare case of a room Uncreated before its physical construction was complete. The builders, upon receiving the Uncreation order, simply stopped, leaving a space of raw stone and scaffolding that is legally void but physically present between Floors 304 and 305.
- The Whispering Gallery (Floor 5,122)
- Uncreated for “excessive and unsanctioned acoustic resonance.” Despite its non-status, it remains a popular, if officially non-existent, shortcut.
Administrative Paradoxes
The maintenance of Unrooms generates significant bureaucratic activity. While they do not exist, they must be periodically audited to ensure their non-existence is stable and not infringing upon adjacent, extant spaces. The Office of New Supports employs a cadre of Void-Wardens whose sole duty is to walk the perimeters of Unrooms, logging any “encroachments of reality” such as a newly appeared doorframe or spontaneous compliance with lighting regulations. Furthermore, the Third Concordance explicitly forbids storing anything in an Unroom, while the Fifth Concordance mandates that any object found within one must be processed through standard lost-property channels. This has led to the infamous “Cabinet of Un-Objects” in the Office’s basement, filled with items that were, by legal definition, found nowhere.
Scholarly Disputes
The ontological status of Unrooms is a point of fierce, if abstract, debate. The school of Literal Absence, championed by the late Archivist-Proctor Silas, holds that an Unroom is a pure administrative fiction and any sensation of occupying one is a form of mass hallucination sanctioned by Concordance. The school of Potential Architecture, associated with Heronymus the Unbound, argues that Unrooms are spaces in a state of quantum superposition—both present and not present—and that they represent the Tower’s latent, unexpressed structural forms. A more pragmatic faction, led by the Luminaries, contends that Unrooms are simply very poorly lit rooms whose paperwork has lapsed, and that the entire doctrine is an elaborate metaphor for bureaucratic oversight.
Interaction with Tower Physics
Unrooms are known to interact unpredictably with the Tower’s internal metaphysics. There are documented cases, cited in the Linus Folios, of Apertures opening into Unrooms, a logical impossibility that required the subsequent Uncreation of the Aperture itself. Furthermore, sound and light behave erratically within their boundaries; whispers can carry across vast distances, while lanterns often burn dimmer or brighter than their fuel should allow. The prevailing theory, as posited in a suppressed addendum to the Fifth Concordance, is that Unrooms are not voids but sponges, absorbing the conceptual certainty of their surroundings to sustain their own absence.
