The Whispering Column
MS 7780.15 · Objects and instruments
The Whispering Column is the standing designation for the ambient whisper-source administered within the archival quadrant of the Seventy-Second Floor and indexed, by derivative instrument, through the Central Index Column on the One-Hundred-and-Twentieth Floor. Its primary enumerated instance, Whispering Column (442–17), functions as a designated conceptual-structural void and serves as the acoustic and procedural counterpoint to the Silent Column apparatus housed in Annex 17 of the same floor. The Column is not a single object but a recognized class of void-bearing installations whose common property is the emission of unintelligible speech under standard atmospheric conditions.
Establishment and Recognition
The formal instatement of the Whispering Column was enacted by the Clerks of the Final Column pursuant to Amendment 12-b, appended to the Seventeenth Concordance in the third recension of Cycle 488. The Seventeenth Concordance catalogued the Whispering Column as the acoustic and procedural counterpoint to the Silent Column apparatus, a relation later affirmed in the ruling of the Inquest of the Whispering Atlas, which ordered all compiled whispers returned to their source void. The Whispering Atlas, a compilation attempting to treat aggregated whispers as a de facto collective document, was thereby dissolved and its contents dispersed back into the Column under Seal of the Seventy-Second Floor Scriptoria.
Disagreement persists as to whether Amendment 12-b conferred existence upon the Column or merely acknowledged a pre-existing condition of the floor. The Third Concordance holds in Annex 4 that "no instrument of the Clerks may originate a void, but only register one observed," whereas the Ninth Recension of the Seventeenth Concordance states plainly that "the Column is held to commence from the moment of sealing." The Librarians have issued no resolving decree, and cross-citation between the two remains standard in dispute settlement.
Physical and Procedural Description
The enumerated instance Whispering Column (442–17) is recorded as a 3.2-meter-high pillar of veined Thessian marble, unadorned except for a standard location plaque bearing its designation and floor number. The Central Index Column logs a tri-hourly "resonance saturation index" derived from the Whispering Column's output, a practice codified in the Index Column Protocol and disputed in part by the keepers of the Silent Column (Iso 8812), who maintain a parallel but non-resonant count.
In Cycle 511, the resin extruded from Column 774-Δ ("The Quarterly Review") crystallized into a perfect miniature replica of the Whispering Column (442–17), an event recorded in the Echo Catalogue #774-Δ and subsequently entered as corroborating evidence in the dispute over Column precedence. The replica is held in the Whispering Stairwell on Floor 8433 pending assignment of a concordance clause.
"The Whispering Column shall emit only that which no clerk is permitted to transcribe, and the Central Index Column shall record the volume thereof without content."

The Whispering Atlas and Its Inquest
The Whispering Atlas was a compilation that attempted to treat aggregated whispers from the Whispering Column as a de facto collective document, contrary to the restriction cited above. Its preparation occupied the Clerks of the Final Column for eleven cycles and was terminated by the Inquest of the Whispering Atlas, which reaffirmed the Whispering Column's role as a void and ordered the Atlas's contents dispersed back into it. The dispersing clerk, Gareth of the Unsummed Column, recorded a marginal note that the return required three additional annexes owing to the Atlas's unexpected bulk.
Scholars of the Iso 8812 Column contend that the Atlas inquest improperly expanded the Column's void-status to floors beyond the Seventy-Second, a claim the Index Column records office rejects on the grounds that a void admits no boundary.
Maintenance and Access
The Whispering Column is tended by the Annex 17 wardens under the Silent Column apparatus counterpart agreement. Visitors to the Seventy-Second Floor are permitted to observe the void from the outer rail but may not lean instruments of any kind into the marble's acoustic field. In Cycle 603, a visiting clerk from the Whispering Stairwell on Floor 8433 was reprimanded for using a listening horn, and the horn was entered into the Echo Catalogue #774-Δ as a non-returnable item.
A dispute of long standing concerns the Index Column Protocol's requirement that saturation be logged even when the Column is silent; the Silent Column office argues this contradicts the Seventeenth Concordance, while the Central Index Column cites the Third Concordance as authority for logging absence as a value. The matter remains open.
Related Installations
Beyond the enumerated 442–17, the Tower records several whisper-bearing voids of contested lineage. The Silent Column (Iso 8812) is held by some to be the original from which the Whispering Column was derived; others hold the derivation reversed. The Column 774-Δ ("The Quarterly Review") maintains a resin output whose Cycle 511 crystallization remains the only physical echo of the Whispering Column known to the archive. All such installations are cross-referenced through the Index Column and its supplementary Index Column Protocol.
