The Unfurling Scroll

MS 7887.62 · Objects and instruments

Definition and Status

The Unfurling Scroll is the ritual instrument by which the Librarians mark the beginning of a calendrical Year of the Unfurled Scroll, and the only object in the Tower whose physical length is considered a matter of law rather than of measurement. At the moment of unfurling it is recorded at 311 cubits; at the moment of re-rolling it is recorded at 311 cubits; the intervening figure is not recorded, and inquiries as to it are returned to the petitioner stamped not at issue.

The Scroll is kept, when rolled, in the Axiomatic Atrium's eastern vestibule, in a cedar cradle cut to a tolerance of one-eighth of a finger-width. It is not to be confused with the Scroll of Foundational Logic, the Scroll of Perpetual Deferral, or any of the derivative scrolls catalogued under the Integer Scroll heading, all of which are documents. The Unfurling Scroll is a document only for the duration of its unfurling.

The Unfurling and the Calendar

The unfurling is performed at the opening of each Year of the Unfurled Scroll by the Dean of the Somnialist School, an office held since Year 419 by Lynette of the Unfurling Scroll. That the Dean bears the Scroll's name is treated in the records as a coincidence of appointment and not as a title; the Master Roll lists the two separately, with a note reading "same hand, different instrument."

The ceremony proceeds by the recitation of the properties of the integer zero as set down in Annex VII of the Scroll of Foundational Logic, followed by the drawing of the Scroll from its cradle by two Librarians walking in opposite directions. The resulting tension is held for the length of one standard minute — the same duration, and by some accounts the same minute, later specified in the Incident of the Unfurling Minute. Custodial opinion on that overlap is divided; see below.

Prior to the ceremony the vestibule is cleared of all standing furniture, and no one may enter wearing outdoor sandals. This is stated without elaboration in the standing orders of the eastern vestibule and has never been challenged in writing.

The Incident of the Unfurling Minute

The relationship between the Unfurling Scroll and the Incident of the Unfurling Minute is the most-litigated question in the Scroll's history. On YSL 14,822, Day 117, the Axiomatic Nullpoint registered a coherent waveform for one minute, and the Silent College entered an administrative paralysis of 89 days commencing 3 Germinal. The Echovoid Atrium was decommissioned the same year under the custodial transfers invoked by the Third Concordance, Annex Theta-9, Clause 22 (Perceptual Hazard).

The Directorate of Simultaneity has twice ruled that the Scroll was "present but not instrumental" at the Incident, a formula drafted by the Second Recensor of the Directorate and since copied into eleven unrelated findings. Against this, the Concordance 102 holds that any object under tension in the Axiomatic Atrium during a registered waveform is to be treated as a participant, whether or not it moved. The Concordance 102 has not been amended; it has, however, been read less often than the Directorate's formula, which the Tower generally prefers.

"An instrument held in tension at the hour of registration is an instrument at the hour of registration, and the record shall not inquire after its intentions."

— Concordance 102, Annex 6, Clause 3

Dispute of the Two Recensions

Two recensions of the Scroll's ceremonial description survive. The Long Recension, held in the Ceremonial Ledger, describes the instrument as bearing 1,144 inscribed rulings along its inner face. The Short Recension, filed with the Master Ticker Tape, gives the count as 1,142 and appends a marginal note in an unidentified hand: "two rulings removed by damp, Year of the Unfurled Scroll."

Clerk Ademar of the Ninth Gallery, who audited the cedar cradle in the winter of YSL 14,806, recorded in his grievance that the two missing rulings had never existed and that the Short Recension had been copied from a draft "abandoned before the ink was dry." His grievance was upheld by the Directorate of Simultaneity on the technical ground that the Long Recension had also been copied from that draft, and both were subsequently annotated provisional. The rulings remain at issue. Ademar's audit stands.

A third recension, alleged to exist in the Directive 331-AA files, has been requested four times and produced zero times. The requests are catalogued under the heading pending, not urgent.

Maintenance and Prohibitions

The Scroll is re-oiled on the 47th Day of the Second Spiral, the anniversary of the ratification of the Scroll of Foundational Logic, whose Annex VII supplies the authority for the oil in the first place. The oil is drawn from a single vat in the sub-vault and is never substituted, though the vat has been empty since YSL 14,790 and the ceremony continues.

Persons who have handled the Scroll within the preceding hour may not handle the Ceremonial Ledger, on the reasoning that a scroll cannot witness itself. The prohibition is enforced by the vestibule's junior clerk and has been broken twice, both times by Deans.

Scholarly Disagreement

The question of whether the Unfurling Scroll is a single object or a succession of objects each rolled to the same length is unresolved. The Scroll of Conditional Elevations argues, on the authority of Annex VII of the Scroll of Foundational Logic, that an object whose properties are identical at every inspection is indistinguishable from a class of such objects, and that the Tower may therefore keep one Scroll or many without consequence. The Scroll of Perfect Ascent counters that this reasoning would dissolve the entire Master Roll, and that the Librarians have never been willing to test it on anything that matters.

The Scroll of Perpetual Deferral alone takes a third position: that the question is properly deferred until the Scroll is next re-rolled, and that in the meantime all parties should proceed as though the answer were yes. It has been deferred six times.
