The Topological Revisionists
MS 1953.07 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Topological Revisionists are a scholarly faction within the Librarians charged with the recension of floor geometries that have drifted from their original survey. Unlike the Beta Revisionists, who adjudicate the standing of Beta-class logs, the Topological Revisionists concern themselves with the cartographic integrity of Spatial-Topological Gaps and the slow unauthorized multiplication of Topological Transformatives. Their authority derives from the Sixth Concordance, though the Second Concordance disputes the extent of it.
Origins and Institutional Standing
The Topological Revisionists were constituted by scriptorial decree in the 114th Recension, following the Collapse of Aperture 19-Omega on Floor 4,402, which left three adjoining reading rooms sharing a single north wall. The founding clerk, Hastrel of the Lower Mezzanine, petitioned the Division V: Spatial and Topological Incoherencies for a standing office to amend such errors before they reached the catalogue. The petition was granted under Sixth Concordance, Clause 7, which states: "where a floor ceases to occupy its recorded position, a body of revision shall be named to restore the record or the floor, at the discretion of that body." The Second Concordance, Annex 12, counters that "no body may restore a floor against the silence of the Third Concordance," a contradiction that has never been settled and is cited in roughly one of every four revision disputes.
The Topological Revisionists share oversight of certain boundary instruments with the Liaison for Inter-Floor Topological Accord and, in matters touching radiant directives, with the Beta Revisionists. The precise division of labour is set out in the Treatise of Shared Apertures, a document amended forty-one times between the 120th and 138th Recensions.
Methods of Revision
A revision begins when a clerk notes a discrepancy between a floor's surveyed shape and its apparent shape. The Topological Revisionists then dispatch a measurer, who records the floor under the Topological Permeability index and the relevant Topological Velocity (V_t) reading. If the discrepancy exceeds 0.4 permits, the case is entered into the Antechamber of Impending Verdicts for preliminary weighing. The Revisionists favour physical re-survey over narrative correction, arguing in the words of the Seventh Recension Charter: "a wall misplaced is a wall, not a sentence."
"A floor that has moved must be met with tape and seal, not with apology."
— Hastrel of the Lower Mezzanine, Founding Note 3
In the winter of the 131st Recension, a measurer assigned to Floor 8,917 recorded a Topological Flux of such violence that the floor briefly occupied two positions separated by eleven staircases; the Revisionists issued a dual certificate, which the Topological Inference Division later declared void on the grounds that a floor cannot be in two places and also correct.
Disagreements with the Beta Revisionists
The Topological Revisionists and the Beta Revisionists have long differed on the status of Desk Beta, which the Beta Revisionists argue "is not an object but a standing condition for Beta-class examination." The Topological Revisionists hold that Desk Beta is, in fact, a piece of furniture located on Floor 2,118 and subject to ordinary revision when it shifts. The dispute was brought before the Antechamber of Impending Verdicts in the 129th Recension; no verdict was returned, and the matter was adjourned pending the completion of Phase Beta: Examination.
Additionally, the Topological Revisionists reject the Beta position that Clause 3 of the Third Concordance actively creates a new past, holding instead that the past is fixed and merely mis-filed. This disagreement has produced three separate recensions of the Treatise of Shared Apertures and one sealed correspondence now held by LIFTA.
Notable Holdings and Inventory
The Revisionists maintain a closed store of instruments withdrawn from active floors. The current inventory includes:
- One reversed plumb-line, Floor 3,004 (recovered 122nd Recension)
- Seventeen aperture seals marked Topological Velocity (Tv)-negative
- The original survey slate of Spatial-Topological Gaps, cracked but legible
Visiting clerks may view the store only with a seal from the Division V: Spatial and Topological Incoherencies; they may not bring chalk, as chalk has been found to encourage floors to redraw themselves.
Current Status
As of the 140th Recension, the Topological Revisionists number somewhere between nine and eleven, a figure left deliberately imprecise in the Sixth Concordance and never audited. They continue to amend the catalogue wherever Topological Velocity (Vt) readings suggest unrecorded drift, and they retain the right, under Clause 7, to restore either the record or the floor. The Second Concordance remains unpersuaded.
