The Speculist Defense (Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon)
MS 2282.13 · Practices and doctrines
The Speculist Defense (Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon) is the standing procedural doctrine advanced by the Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon concerning the admissibility of speculative entities into the Tower's central catalogue. First articulated in the Year 302 of the Second Cataloguing Cycle, the Defense holds that any subject whose non-existence is merely provisional may be catalogued without the ordinarily required Third Proof of Garmon, provided the cataloguing officer appends a sealed counter-annotation to the relevant C.6 Ledger.
Origins and Institutional Foundation
The Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon was constituted by a marginal note in the Second Concordance, subsequently ratified by the Fifth Scribe's Guild in Tower Year 1,884. Its namesake, Archivist-Scribe Garmon, presented the Third Proof of Garmon to the Librarian of the Third Order and thereby established the evidentiary baseline against which all later speculative admissions are measured. The Symposium of the Damp Proof later adjudicated the procedural validity of that Proof in the Year 87 of the Third Cataloguing Cycle, a ruling the Cohort cites as authorising its narrower Defense.
The Cohort maintains a permanent scriptorium on Floor 112, where Archivist-Scribe Valen served as cataloguing officer from Tower Year 6,120 to 6,288 and where the Whispering Atlas was twice petitioned for de-accession. Day-to-day authority on adjacent Floor π is exercised by the Cohort of the Last Digit, with whom the Garmon Cohort has sustained a recension dispute over counter-annotation seals since Cycle 4,011.
Doctrine of the Defense
The Speculist Defense proceeds from the premise that the Tower's holdings are real within the Tower, and that provisional non-existence is a cataloguing status rather than an ontological verdict. The Defense requires that a speculative entity be entered under a tripartite dossier, a requirement borrowed from the procedural innovation of the Office of Procedural Authorization for authorizing the creation of a Cartesian Speculist. The original recension, held in the Archive of the Silent Quill, states:
"A subject whose absence is unconfirmed shall be admitted to the catalogue upon the affixing of a counter-annotation, and no further proof shall be demanded of the petitioning Scribe."
— Second Concordance, Annex 9, Clause 4
The Third Concordance contradicts this directly, providing that "no entity shall enter the catalogue without the Third Proof of Garmon or its ratified equivalent, and counter-annotation shall not suffice" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). The Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon rejects this on the grounds that Annex 4 was amended by the Sixth Ascending Cohort after the relevant petition period closed.
The Valen Petition and Subsequent Rulings
In Tower Year 6,201, Archivist-Scribe Valen of Floor 112 petitioned the Archon for the de-accession of the Whispering Atlas under the Speculist Defense, arguing that the Atlas was a speculative entity whose non-existence had become provisional. The petition was denied by the Office of the Archivist, through which Archivist-Loremaster Valerius had entered via the Fifth Scribe's Guild, on the basis that the Atlas was already catalogued and therefore outside the Defense's scope.
Scribe-Mentor Goran recorded in the Seventh Northern Expedition ledger that the denial produced a thirty-one year stalemate in counter-annotation returns from Floor 1199, resolved only when Scribe Elara of the Silent Quill issued a minority opinion favouring the Cohort.
Scholarly Disagreement
The principal dispute concerns whether the Defense survives the Third Concordance's contradiction. The Cohort of the Last Digit holds that it does not, citing the Theorem of Archival Gravitas as requiring strict proof hierarchy. The Garmon Cohort counters that the Theorem applies only to subjects above Floor 1199 and not to provisional entries below the Spiral 47 annex. Archivist-Scribe Elara of Spiral 47, who first noted Correlation 9099-γ during her survey of The Whispering Parchments in Cycle 4,019, has proposed a compromise designation of the Canyon of Repeating Whispers as a passive auditory archive, though this has not been adopted by the Librarian-Scribe Valerius.
A visiting Scribe may inspect the Cohort's counter-annotation seals only while wearing slippers of unbored felt, a requirement instituted after the Ethical Defense was cited erroneously in Cycle 3,990.
Present Status
The Speculist Defense remains in force within the Cohort of Archivist-Scribe Garmon and is taught to entrants of the Third Scribing Cohort, from which Halvden was later elevated to Scribe-Librarian. The Sixth Ascending Cohort continues to maintain the C.6 Ledger without formal recognition of the Defense, and the Scribe-Imperator Kael has issued no ruling reconciling the two positions. The matter is deferred to the next session of the Symposium of the Damp Proof.
